These two crouching lions are approximately life-sized, placed on pedestals measuring 54 x 66". The lions were originally purchased by Frederick Weyerhaeuser for Spencer Square in 1889-90.

When the U.S. Federal Building and Rock Island Post Office were built on the site on Spencer Square, the lions were relocated to the entrance of Longview Park (other sculpture original located in Spencer Square include David Richard's sculpture of Black Hawk).
