Based on drawings by Glenn Boyles, "Understanding" represents our relationship to the universe and search for understanding. The sculpture's three bronze arms support the Earth and moon and reach for a sun-like sphere. Chains, symbolic of DNA, wind in a double helix around the tall base.

"Understanding" is installed in a garden space in the southern end of the Family Museum's parking lot. The Family Museum of Arts & Science is located off 18th Street and Spruce Hills Drive, next to the Bettendorf Public Library.
