Art Education Program
The basic mission of our undergraduate Art Education curriculum is to prepare future art teachers to meet the challenges of teaching in public school. Our goal is to produce a professional art educator who can meet the needs of all learners in a variety of educational environments.

The Art Education Program at WIU is aligned with Illinois state standards and will prepare the students to:

  • Understand the sensory elements, organizational principles, and expressive qualities of the visual arts.
  • Understand the commonalities, distinctions, and connections in and among the fine arts.
  • Understand the process and production of the visual arts.
  • Be able to apply knowledge and skills necessary to create expressively and with technical proficiency in a range of media and processes.
  • Be able to analyze how the visual arts function in history, society and everyday life.
  • Understand how the visual arts shape and reflect history, society, and everyday life.
  • Understand and will able to apply pedagogical knowledge and skills appropriate to the teaching of the visual arts.

Art-Ed Connect

New! Art-Ed Connect on WesternOnline

Art-Ed Connect is a mentoring and peer program for all WIU Art Education students. This is an opportunity for Seniors and Student Teachers to share their experiences with each other and also to guide, discuss and answer questions from Fresh, Soph, and Juniors. Discussion questions from myself, and from you, will help make this a successful clearinghouse of information. This will especially be beneficial during and post-student teaching. Got a great lesson plan that worked during student teaching -- don't forget to share it. Got a lesson that didn't work so well -- share it anyway (get some input from your peers).

If you are an Art Education major and not enrolled in the Art-Ed Connect let me know. I should have all students that are currently enrolled in Art Education classes. If you are not taking current AE courses I may not have you enrolled in Art-Ed Connect.

To access Art-Ed Connect just log into WesternOnline and you will see the link.

ART 437 students have been designing lesson plans for elementary and now have the opportunity of practical application. By teaching the lessons in a "real world scenario" is an invaluable experience. Thanks to an area school it became a reality.
