General Information
The Jazz Band at Western Illinois University performs music from the common jazz repertoire including composers such as Thad Jones, Sammy Nestico, Mark Taylor, Maria Schneider, and Michael Mossman. The Jazz Band performs two concerts per semester including the WIU Jazz Festival.
Students learn the role of individual performance practices for each instrument in the traditional large jazz ensemble as well as jazz theory and techniques for voice-leading based jazz improvisation.
Section leaders in the Jazz Band take an aggressive role in maintaining top performance standards for their section and often schedule extra sectional rehearsals. The ensemble rehearses from 2:00 to 2:50 p.m., Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
