Scholarships for the Department of African American Studies

The Dr. Essie Manuel Rutledge Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Full-time in African American Studies
  • Junior or Senior (minimum 60 semester hours completed) by Spring, prior to Fall award
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (transfer GPA may be included) after 30 semester hours at WIU
  • First preference given to students majoring in African American Studies
  • Second preference given to students majoring in Sociology and minoring in African American Studies
  • Third preference given to students majoring in any CAS major with African American Studies or Sociology minor
  • Written essay: 2-3 pages explaining what previous and/or present activities and experiences demonstrate her/his potential leadership qualities that foster social justice

Terms:

$500 to be applied to the student's university account, $250 for the Fall semester and $250 for the Spring semester, pending 10th day enrollment verification

Selection Process:

Call for applications in the Spring semester. Award selection based on application documents, award selection determined by the Department of African American Studies Scholarship Committee. Award announced prior to end of Spring semester with financial award made the following academic year.

Dr. Rudi Womack Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Undergraduate student with a minimum 2.0 WIU GPA
  • Enrolled full time
  • Current member of the Heritage Ensemble or United Voices of Western Inspirational Singers
  • Preference to a student currently registered through the Office of Academic Services (OAS)
  • Second preference to a student who has been registered through OAS
  • Shows leadership in the Heritage Ensemble or United Voices of Western Inspirational Singers and through activities on campus

TERMS:

Award amount is $500 per year for books. Award will be direct deposited into the student’s designated bank account ½ fall and ½ spring.

Selection Process:

Recipient will be selected by the Foundation Scholarship Selection Committee.

Social Justice Award

Criteria:

  • Senior in Fall of year following award (open to all majors)
  • Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
  • Written essay, "What Acts of Social Justice have You Performed?"
  • Letter of recommendation from a WIU faculty member

Terms:

 $250 to be applied to the student's university account in one lump sum, pending 10th day enrollment verification

Selection Process:

Call for applications in the Spring semester. Award selection based on application documents, determined by the Department of African American Studies Chair with input from faculty at the discretion of the Chair. Award announced prior to end of Spring semester with financial award made beginning of the following Fall semester.
