Scholarships for the Department of Chemistry

Benjamin G. and Donna M. Hughes Scholarship in Chemistry

Criteria:

  • Preference is given to a Chemistry undergraduate or graduate major interested in teaching
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.00 (overall and in the Chemistry major)

Terms:

$1,000 scholarship is awarded annually, ½ fall and ½ spring to assist with student expenses. The Department of Chemistry may elect to apply the scholarship to the student's university account or direct deposit to the student's designated bank account.

Additional Comments:

Applications are reviewed by the scholarship committee and consideration is taken on the applicants GPA in Chemistry, extra-curricular activities, and service while keeping in mind the scholarship criteria. The scholarship committee makes recommendations of the top two or three candidates and provides the information to the chemistry faculty. The Chemistry faculty determines the winner by faculty vote.

Selection Process:

Applications will be reviewed and recipients will be selected by the Department of Chemistry Chair in consultation with the Chemistry Department Scholarship Committee

  • Students with expressed interest in, or majoring in any Chemistry related discipline
  • demonstrated desire to graduate and contribute to said career field

Currens Memorial Award

Criteria:

Applicant  must be a senior Chemistry major who has provided outstanding service to the Department of Chemistry

Terms:

The award amount is determined by the annual interest earnings on the endowment

Selection Process:

Recipient is chosen by faculty in the Department of Chemistry. Selection is made in the spring semester, preferably at the department's honors night.

Margaret & Jack Stites Pre-Pharmacy Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Enrolled at Western Illinois University
  • Pursuing the pre-pharmacy option in the Department of Chemistry
  • Must have completed 30 semester hours by the conclusion of the spring semester
  • Preference will be given to applicants that have actual pharmacy experience
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA or better
  • Financial need is not a consideration

Additional Information:

Student must demonstrate outstanding contributions to the Department of Chemistry

Terms:

The award amount is determined by the annual interest earnings on the endowment, but is at least $1,000 applied ½ fall and ½ spring to the student's university account

Maurice Peterson Outstanding Incoming Freshman Award

Criteria:

  • Must be enrolled as a freshman at WIU
  • Pursuing a B.S. with a major in either Chemistry of Forensic Chemistry
  • Preference will be given to students who have a composite ACT score of 30 or greater and rank in the top 10% of their high school class

Financial need is not a consideration. This scholarship is non-renewable; however, recipients are encouraged to apply for other scholarships within the Department of Chemistry for the following years.
