Scholarships for the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures 

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will give preference to students who declare or have declared Foreign Languages as their primary major.

The Blenda Olson Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Female
  • Junior or Senior
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA in foreign language studies and a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA
  • Must be active in student, community, academic affairs or travel abroad
  • Demonstrates dedication to the profession of language studies and a sympathetic view of foreign languages and cultures
  • Financial need
  • Must have completed 30 or more semester hours in residence at WIU

Terms:

Award amount is determined based on annual interest earnings on the endowment

Additional Comments:

Candidates may be interviewed by the departmental Honors Committee

Selection Process:

Selection will be made by the faculty and chairperson of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures

The Clifford A. and Rosa Julstrom Foreign Languages Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Must be a junior
  • Must have a declared major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • Must be a full-time student
  • Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrate leadership and/or academic excellence in the department

Terms:

Award amount is determined based on annual interest earnings on the endowment

Selection Process:

Selection will be made by the Foreign Languages faculty and chairperson on the basis of the application and supporting material (two letters of recommendation)

Department of Foreign Languages Alumni Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Incoming freshman
  • Foreign Language major
  • Preference given to a student with a minimum 25 ACT or in the upper 25% of graduating class

Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures Study Abroad Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Must be accepted into a faculty-led study abroad offered through the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • Must have completed at least 1 semester of foreign language coursework with a minimum GPA in said coursework of 3.0
  • Must have declared a major or minor in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • Applicants must complete an essay (minimum 500 words) in English describing their prior experience with foreign languages and how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and/or career plans

Terms:

Awards range from $250 to $500 annually based on the ratio of available funds to qualified applicants and is disbursed to the student's university account in the semester of study abroad

Additional Information:

The department may request additional supplementary materials from scholarship applicants (e.g. letters of recommendation, essay).

The Jerry Purdum Memorial Scholarship

Criteria:

Applicants for these scholarships must have a declared major in Business or French, have financial need and participate in student activities, community services and academic affairs.

  1. Applicants majoring in Business must be enrolled as full-time students and must be making satisfactory progress toward a degree in Business. Any undergraduate students may apply and must have a minimum GPA of 3.00.
  2. Applicants majoring in French must be enrolled as full-time students. Any undergraduate students may apply and must have minimum GPA of 3.00. Preference will be given to incoming freshman who have a 25 ACT or higher and rank in the upper 25% of high school graduating class.

Terms:

Award amounts are determined by annual interest earnings on the endowment. Two scholarships are awarded-one in Business and one in French.

Selection Process:

Recipients will be chosen by the scholarship committees in the College of Business and Technology and the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures

Professor Emeritus Scholarship in Foreign Languages and Literatures

Criteria:

  • Must have a declared major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0
  • Applicants must have been accepted to a semester long study abroad program in French, German or Spanish that is not led by a WIU faculty member

Terms:

$400 award is disbursed to the student's university account in the semester of study abroad

The Vivian Diana Kline and Lenore Huston Kline Current Student Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Must have a declared major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • Must have completed at least 3 semester hours of coursework in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 for coursework taken in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • Preference may be given to primary (or first) majors
  • Applicants must complete an essay (minimum of 500 words) in English describing their prior experience with foreign languages and how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and career plans

Terms:

Awards range from $1,000-$10,000 annually based on the ratio of available funds to qualified applicants and is disbursed half in the Fall semester and half in the Spring semester to the student's university account. Must obtain a minimum GPA of 3.0 for coursework taken in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures during Fall Semester in order to receive the Spring Semester portion of the award.

Additional Information:

Recipient(s) must declare a first or second major in a degree program offered in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures before the scholarship is dispersed. The department may request additional supplementary materials from scholarship applicants (e.g. letters of recommendation).

Should the University offer Greek or Latin as a major, preference will be given to applicants in either or both of these majors.

  • Must be an active major in a degree offered by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and be making adequate progress towards completion of the degree
  • Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.2
  • Must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 for coursework taken in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • PLEASE NOTE: Students desiring an increased award amount must complete the entire application package again as if they were applying for the first time

The Vivian Diana Kline and Lenore Huston Kline New Freshman/Transfer Students Scholarship

Criteria:

  • New freshman must have completed a minimum of two years of high school foreign language instruction with a minimum GPA for such coursework of 3.5. Transfer students are waived from this requirement if they have completed 6 semester hours of foreign language coursework at the post-secondary level with a minimum GPA of 3.5 in such coursework
  • A minimum ACT of 25 is normally required for eligibility, but may be waived in cases where the scholarship committee believes there is significant evidence of academic achievement from other sources
  • Must declare a major in the degree program offered by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures upon enrollment at WIU and enroll in a foreign language course at the appropriate level (as determined by transcript evaluation and/or placement exam) during the first semester of attendance at WIU
  • Preference may be given to primary (or first) majors
  • Applicants must complete an essay (minimum 500 words) in English describing their prior experience with foreign languages and how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and/or career plans

  • Must have completed at least 1 semester of foreign language coursework 
  • Must have declared a major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
  • Applicants must complete an essay (minimum 500 words) in English describing their prior experience with foreign languages and how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and/or career plans
  • Applicants who have not previously received a Kline Study Abroad Scholarship will be given preference

Terms:

Awards range from $500-$7,000 annually based on the ratio of available funds to qualified applicants and is disbursed to the student's university account in the semester of study abroad

Additional Information:

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures may require applicants to submit supplemental materials such as a letter of recommendation
