Scholarships for the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies

Mary Olive Woods Academic Excellence Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Declared major in Religious Studies and enrolled in a Philosophy course OR declared major in Philosophy and enrolled in a Religious Studies course
  • Enrolled full-time
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA
  • A minimum of 30 hours completed
  • A written essay with specific criteria determined by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Scholarship Committee

Terms:

Up to two scholarships are available for $6,000 each year. The award money will be disbursed at the beginning of each semester ($3,000 per semester). No student may receive more than one type of Mary Olive Woods Scholarship in any given academic year. The department has the discretion of deciding the number of scholarships to award each year. Scholarships are subject to funding availability from the Mary Olive Woods Trust.

Mary Olive Woods Academic Achievement Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Declared major in Religious Studies OR declared major in Philosophy and enrolled in a Religious Studies course
  • Enrolled full-time
  • GPA minimum of 3.25 overall or in major
  • For incoming freshman: ACT of 25 or higher and minimum high school GPA of 3.25
  • A written essay with specific criteria determined by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Scholarship Committee

Terms:

Scholarships are available for $3,000 each year. The award money will be disbursed at the beginning of each semester ($1,500 per semester). No student may receive more than one type of Mary Olive Woods Scholarship in any given academic year. The department has the discretion of deciding the number of scholarships to award each year. Scholarships are subject to funding availability from the Mary Olive Woods Trust.

Award amount is up to $1,500 each year. The award money will be disbursed at the beginning of each semester ($750/semester). No student may receive more than one type of Mary Olive Woods Scholarship in any given academic year. The department has the discretion of deciding the number of scholarships to award each year. Scholarships are subject to funding availability from the Mary Olive Woods Trust.

Paul Mundschenk Scholarship in Religious Studies

Criteria:

  • Declared major in Religious Studies with an expressed interest in Asian religions
  • Must have already taken at least two Religious Studies courses at WIU and receive a B grade at minimum
  • An essay is required in response to a question posed by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Scholarship Committee

Terms:

Award amount will be determined by the annual interest earnings on the endowment, but should be a minimum of $1,000. The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Scholarship Committee has the discretion of deciding the scholarship amount and number of scholarships (up to 3) to award each year

Selection Process:

Applicants will be reviewed by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Scholarship Committee after essays have been submitted and read. The recipient(s) will be chosen by the Paul Mundschenk Scholarship in Religious Studies Scholarship Committee

Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies Scholarship

Criteria:

  • Major in the department
  • A minimum of 90 hours completed
  • Minimum 3.5 GPA in the major
  • Demonstrated excellence and performance in the major

Terms:

One scholarship is available for up to $300 each year. The award money will be disbursed during the semester in which the student is planning to graduate. No student may receive more than one Department Scholarship. Scholarships are subject to funding availability from the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Foundation.

Recipient will be chosen by the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Scholarship Committee
