Annual Graduate and Undergraduate Biology Student Research Symposium

The student research symposium is a venue for our undergraduate and graduate students to present their research to the department and Western Illinois University. Graduate students with research proposals and graduate students with data for their research projects will present oral presentations or posters. Undergraduate students will present posters.
This event is designed to showcase the many varied research activities of our undergraduate and graduate students, and to give our graduate students experience in presenting the results of their research before taking these presentations to a regional or national scientific meeting. All graduate biology students involved in research are expected to participate. This is an opportunity for our graduate students to showcase their research activities.

The best oral and poster presentations will be recognized at an award ceremony. Three research prizes will be awarded to the best oral presentations by graduate students (first, second and third place). The three best graduate posters and the three best undergraduate posters will be also recognized at the award ceremony of the WIU Biology Student Research Symposium 2013 (see program). The best undergraduate poster will be nominated by the Biology Department to compete for the best overall poster at the Annual Thomas E. Helm Undergraduate Research Day Evaluation: Judges will evaluate oral presentations and posters based on the quality of their research (significance, design and conclusions) and the clarity of presentation. An effort will be made to send at least two judges to each oral and poster presentation.
