Scholarships and Resources

The following scholarships are available. Please consult the Departmental Administrative Staff for further details and please give consideration to applying.

The Vivian Diana Kline and Lenore Huston Kline Scholarship for New Freshman

Applicants Must:

  • have completed a minimum of two years of high school foreign language instruction with a minimum GPA for such coursework of 3.5.
  • have a minimum ACT of 25 (normally required for eligibility), but may be waived in cases where the scholarship committee believes there is significant evidence of academic achievement from other sources.
  • declare a major in degree program offered by the Foreign Languages and Literatures Department upon enrollment at WIU and enroll in a foreign language course at the appropriate level (as determined by transcript evaluation and/or placement exam) during the first semester of attendance at WIU.
  • complete an essay (minimum of 500 words) in English describing;
    • their prior experience with foreign languages
    • how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and career plans

The Vivian Diana Kline and Lenore Huston Kline Scholarship for Current Students

Applicants Must:

  • have a declared major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
  • have completed at least 6 semester hours of coursework in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
  • have a minimum BPA of 3.5 for coursework taken in the Foreign Languages and Literatures Department.
  • complete an essay (minimum of 500 words) in English describing;
    • their prior experience with foreign languages
    • how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and career plans

The Vivian Diana Kline and Lenore Huston Kline Scholarship for Study Abroad

Applicants Must:

  • be accepted into a faculty-led study abroad offered through the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures; for study abroad other than Spanish, must be accepted into study abroad program approved by the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
  • have completed at least 2 semesters of foreign language coursework with a minimum GPA in said coursework of 3.2.
  • declare a major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
  • complete an essay (minimum of 500 words) in English describing;
    • their prior experience with foreign languages
    • how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and career plans

The Foreign Languages Alumni Scholarship

Applicant Must:

  • be an incoming freshman
  • be a Foreign Language major

        Preference will be given to a student with a minimum 25 ACT or in the upper 25% of graduating class.

The Clifford A. and Rosa Julstrom Scholarship

Applicants Must:

  • be a Junior.
  • be a Foreign Language major.
  • be a full-time student.
  • have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA.
  • demonstrate leadership and/or academic excellence in the department.

The Blenda Olson Scholarship

Applicants Must:

  • be a female.
  • be a Junior or Senior.
  • have a minimum 3.5 GPA in foreign language studies and a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA.
  • be active in student, community, academic affairs, or travel abroad.
  • demonstrate dedication to the profession of language studies and a sympathetic view of foreign languages and cultures.
  • have a financial need.
  • have completed 30 or more semester hours in residence at WIU.

The Jerry Purdum Memorial Scholarship in French

Applicants Must:

  • have a declared major in Business or French.
    • if majoring in Business: must be enrolled as full-time students and must be making satisfactory progress toward a degree in Business. Any undergraduate students may apply, must have a minimum 3.00 GPA.
    • if majoring in French: must be enrolled as full-time students. Any undergraduate students may apply, must have a minimum 3.00 GPA. Preference will be given to incoming freshman who have a 25 ACT or higher and rank in the upper 25% of high school graduating class.
  • have a financial need.
  • participate in student activities, community service, and academic affairs.

The Professor Emeritus Scholarship

Applicants Must:

  • have declared major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
  • have a minimum overall GOA of 3.0.
  • have been accepted to a semester-long study abroad program in French, German or Spanish that is not led by a WIU faculty member.

The Dr. Robert F. and Betty F. Druien Scholarship

Applicants Must:

  • have declared major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
  • be currently enrolled in a Chinese class at any level and plan to continue study of Chinese for at least one more semester.
  • have a minimum overall GOA of 3.0.
  • complete an essay (minimum of 500 words) in English describing their prior experience with foreign languages and how they plan to utilize Chinese in their future academic and/or professional careers.
