Scholarships and Resources

The following scholarships are available. Please consult the Departmental Administrative Staff for further details and please give consideration to applying.

The Vivian D. Kline Scholarship for New Freshmen

Applicants Must:

  • have completed a minimum of two years of high school foreign language instruction with a minimum GPA for such coursework of 3.5.
  • have a minimum ACT of 25 (normally required for eligibility), but may be waived in cases where the scholarship committee believes there is significant evidence of academic achievement from other sources.
  • declare a major in degree program offered by the Foreign Languages and Literatures Department upon enrollment at WIU and enroll in a foreign language course at the appropriate level (as determined by transcript evaluation and/or placement exam) during the first semester of attendance at WIU.
  • complete an essay (minimum of 500 words) in English describing;
    • their prior experience with foreign languages
    • how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and career plans

The Vivian D. Kline Scholarship for Current Students

Applicants Must:

  • have a declared major in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
  • have completed at least 6 semester hours of coursework in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures.
  • have a minimum BPA of 3.5 for coursework taken in the Foreign Languages and Literatures Department.
  • complete an essay (minimum of 500 words) in English describing;
    • their prior experience with foreign languages
    • how they plan to utilize foreign languages in their future academic and career plans

The Blenda Olson Scholarship

GPA, ACT, Year in School: 3.5 GPA Foreign Lang./3.0 Overall, Junior/Senior
Major, Other Requirements: Female
Deadline to Apply: Contact Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
Award Amount: $1000 annually

Comments: Financial need, Dedication to profession of language studies, etc.

The Clifford A. and Rosa Julstrom Scholarship

GPA, ACT, Year in School: 3.0 cum. GPA, Junior
Major, Other Requirements: Foreign Language Major
Deadline to Apply: Contact Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
Award Amount: $500

Apply to/Contact: Chair, Foreign Languages and Literatures
Comments: Selection made by Foreign Language faculty

The Foreign Languages Alumni Scholarship

GPA, ACT, Year in School: ACT of 25 or above,25% class rank, entering freshman
Major, Other Requirements: Foreign Language Major
Deadline to Apply: Contact Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
Award Amount: $1000 ($250 for four scholars)

Comments: Selection made by Foreign Language faculty

The Foreign Languages and Literature Western Opportunity Scholarship

GPA, ACT, Year in School: Entering Freshman, Transfer, or Currently Enrolled
Major, Other Requirements: Under-represented students
Deadline to Apply: Contact Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
Award Amount: $500-$1,000 per year

Apply to/Contact: Scholarship Office
Comments: Renewable up to four years

The Jerry Purdum Memorial Scholarship in French

GPA, ACT, Year in School: Must be full-time student, any class-freshman through senior; New freshman must have 25 or higher ACT and continuing students must have 3.0 or higher GPA
Major, Other Requirements: Preference will be given to incoming new freshman students
Deadline to Apply: Contact Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures
Award Amount: $1000 annually

Comments: Financial need, participation activities and community and academic affairs.
