Dr. Timothy M. Roberts, recently on the faculty of Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey, joined the WIU History Department in Fall 2008 as our new tenure-track Assistant Professor of Nineteenth Century American History. Dr. Roberts, who earned his D. Phil. in History at Oxford University in 1998, is a specialist in nineteenth-century trans-Atlantic U.S. history. He teaches the Department's upper-division and graduate courses on the Early Republic through Antebellum Era as well as on the Civil War and Reconstruction; he also offers the Department's course on the History of Constitutional Law.
Dr. Roberts's first book, Distant Revolutions: 1848 and the Challenge to American Exceptionalism, is forthcoming from the University of Virginia Press. He recently held an Andrew Mellon Foundation Research Fellowship from the Massachusetts Historical Society and is the winner of the 2006 Ralph D. Gray Best Article Prize from the Society of Historians of the Early American Republic. We are delighted that he has joined our faculty here at Western.
