History Major Abby Lagemann is Keynote Speaker at Annual Scholars' Ceremony; 18 History Majors Honored

WIU History graduate student Abby Lagemann, who graduated magna cum laude with an honors B.A. in History in 2009, was the keynote speaker at WIU's 34th Annual Scholars' Presentation Ceremony, held on 7 November 2010. Ms. Lagemann, who spoke after Provost Jack Thomas and Trustee Bill Griffin, is the Darrell and Virginia Dykstra Graduate History Scholar for 2009-2011 as well as a two-time winner of History Professor Emeritus Awards.
Also present to be honored at the ceremony was History Teacher Certification major Lauren Armstead, the Larry T. Balsamo History Teacher Education Scholar. Ms. Armstead, who also represents secondary education students from across the university on the University Teacher Education Committee, was presented by Dr. Larry T. Balsamo, who endowed the scholarship which carries his name.
Eighteen History majors and graduate students holding twenty-six scholarships in 2010 were honored at the ceremony:

Amanda Doyle of Decatur, a Dr. Emily Leonard History Scholar in 2009-2010 and 2010-2011
Robert Deveraux of Macomb, a History Professor Emeritus Award Winner in Spring 2010
Sarah Farha of Quincy, the College of Arts and Sciences College Scholar for Fall 2010, the History Department Scholar for Fall 2010, the Victor and Mary Hicken History Scholar in Spring 2010, a Dr. Emily Leonard History Scholar in Fall 2010, and a Norman C. and Carmelita M.
