History Majors Honored at WIU's Spring 2012 Honors Convocation

Six History majors were among the outstanding Western Illinois University graduating seniors honored at WIU's Spring 2012 Honors Convocation on Friday, May 11. Medallions were presented individually by Provost Ken Hawkinson to the student graduating as History's Departmental Scholar, to those graduating with distinction (based on GPA) -- summa cum laude (with highest distinction), magna cum laude (with high distinction, and cum laude (with distinction) -- and to those graduating as Centennial Honors College Honors Scholars with Honors in History.
The History majors being honored included:
Valerie Corey, History Departmental Scholar and Summa cum Laude Honors Scholar in History, who was awarded three medallions;
Sharon Herrington, Magna cum Laude Honors Scholar in History, who was awarded two medallions;
Kristen Johansen, Magna cum Laude History Teacher Certification major, who was awarded one medallion;
Jennifer Callison, cum Laude History Teacher Certification major, who was awarded one medallion;
Amanda Doyle, cum Laude History major, who was awarded one medallion; and
Molly Brockman, Honors Scholar in History Teacher Certification, who was awarded one medallion.
The History Honors Luncheon, at which the students graduating with distinction were honored together with their families, was held earlier that day. At that time, Dr. Virginia Boynton, History Department Chair, presented the students with plaques from the History Department honoring their exemplary achievements. Dr. Virginia Jelatis, Honors Thesis Advisor for Departmental Scholar Valerie Corey, and Dr. Ute Chamberlin, Honors Thesis Advisor for Sharon Herrington, also attended the luncheon and the Honors Convocation, as did Dr. Jennifer McNabb, incoming Associate Director of the Honors College.
