MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR OPTION A STUDENTS
Mathematics Alumni Scholarship
These are scholarships awarded to students through the generosity of alumni of the Department of Mathematics. They are given to new freshman mathematics majors, currently enrolled mathematics majors, and transfer students who have listed mathematics as their intended major. Each recipient must remain a math major for the period of the scholarship. Each academic year approximately ten scholarships are awarded. Amount of the award is $1,000 per year.
Criteria
- Must be recommended by two high school teachers addressing the student’s interest in mathematics and potential to succeed in a career related to mathematics; and must remain a math major for the period of the scholarship.
- Incoming freshman must have an ACT math score of at least 23 or be in the upper 25% on an equivalent national assessment of mathematics ability and must be in the upper 20% of the student’s high school graduating class.
- Continuing students must have an overall college grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale (students with less than 30 semester hours must submit a copy of ACT or other standardized test scores) and must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average in mathematics courses that count in the major (the number of mathematics courses completed will be one consideration).
- Transfer students must be transferring with mathematics as the intended major; must have an overall college grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale (students with less than 30 semester hours must submit a copy of ACT or other standardized test scores) and must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average in mathematics courses that count in the major (the number of mathematics courses completed will be one consideration).
Fred Rattner Memorial Scholarship
This is a scholarship given to a beginning freshman (when available). The student must be enrolled full-time with a major in mathematics and must have an ACT score of 24 or higher (or the equivalent on a national assessment of mathematics ability) or be in the upper 10% of his or her class. The award is renewable. A student need not reapply for the award as long as he or she remains in good standing with the University and maintains a 3.0 or higher grade point average.
H. Glenn Ayre Award
This is a scholarship awarded to juniors, seniors, and graduate mathematics majors. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher is required in all mathematics courses and in all courses completed. Amount of the award is $1,000 per year.
Jack Burlak Scholar
This is a scholarship awarded to undergraduate mathematics majors. The basis of the award is demonstrated outstanding scholarship in mathematics. No specific grade point average is required. The amount of the scholarship is $800 per year.
Ronald Maurer Memorial
This is a scholarship awarded to mathematics majors who have attended Western Illinois University at least two semesters and have at least one semester remaining before graduation. No specific grade point average is required. The amount of the award is $800 per year.
Application Form
Consideration of applications will begin on April 15 and continue until all scholarships are awarded.
