Department of Mathematics and Philosophy


Academic Requirements for Admission:

  1. Undergraduate degree in mathematics or coursework equivalent to a major in mathematics.  Students who do not fulfill the coursework requirements may be admitted at the discretion of the Departmental Graduate Committee with admission usually conditional upon the student filling specified deficiencies.
  2. Undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4-point scale or a GPA of at least 3.0 for the final two years of undergraduate coursework.
  3. Students who do not fulfill the GPA requirements will not be considered for admission unless they have demonstrated sufficient competence in mathematics coursework (as determined by the Department Graduate Committee) and complete the general part of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with Quantitative Reasoning score above the 65th percentile.

Required Admission Materials:

  1. A completed Graduate Admission Application (available from School of Graduate Studies, 309/298-1806, www.wiu.edu/grad)
  2. Three letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s academic potential at the graduate level. These references can be submitted by mail, e-mail or online (www.wiu.edu/grad). If letters of reference are sent by e-mail, they should be sent to the Graduate School at Grad-Office@wiu.edu

Academic Requirements for Assistantships:

  1. Overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better.
  2. (International students only)  Provide evidence of English language proficiency by: completing Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or IELTS (academic format) .
  3. Complete all prerequisites for 500-level core courses and at least one rigorous proof-writing/proof-based course.  (See the MS handbook.)
  4. All applicants are strongly encouraged to take the general part of the GRE.

Required Graduate Assistantship Materials:

  1. All documentation required for admission, including:
    • Assistantship application
    • Transcripts
    • Three letters of recommendation.
  2. A completed "Application for Graduate Assistantship" (pdf, available from School of Graduate Studies, (309) 289-1806, www.wiu.edu/grad/)
  3. A written statement of purpose. Submit the statement to the Graduate School at Grad-Office@wiu.edu
  4. If you are an international student, evidence of English language proficiency (TOEFL or IELTS).
