Industry vs Academia: A perspective

Speaker: Dr. Tushar Choudhary
Date: Friday, October 23, 2020
Time: 4:00 P.M. Central Standard Time
Zoom Link:  https://wiu.zoom.us/j/98745433625

Abstract: Both, academia and industry are extremely important pillars of the society. Inspite of this commonality between them, the two differ from each other in many aspects. The key differences will be discussed in this presentation based on personal observations over a couple of decades.

About the speaker: Dr. Tushar Choudhary has twenty-five years of R&D experience in addressing environmental issues in the energy field. His experience covers a wide spectrum from fundamental research to technology development & commercialization to technology management. Prior to retiring, he served in a dual role as the Director of Technology Analysis & Advancement and Sr. Principal Scientist at a multinational energy company. He has been granted 40 U.S. & International patents and has published more than 50 papers in reputed scientific journals. He has received numerous awards/honors within and external to the energy industry. Some of his external awards include the Oklahoma Chemist of the Year Award (American Chemical Society), Global Indus Technovator Award (MIT), and Southwest Industrial Innovation Award (American Chemical Society). Dr. Choudhary received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Texas A&M University, College Station.

Physics, Insurance, and Data Science!

Speaker: Dr. Sunish Menon
Date: Friday, October 23, 2020
Time: 3:00 P.M. Central Daylight Time
Zoom Link:  https://wiu.zoom.us/j/98745433625

Abstract: This presentation will contain some general information about data science careers especially in relation to insurance and actuarial science. I will share some highlevel overview of how various industries are transforming through data. Industries require basic knowledge from various science fields including Physics. This is especially true when large amount of data is generated from sensors (IoT) for business applications. As an example, I will show how vehicle telematics is changing the traditional insurance pricing field into a multidisciplinary domain requiring math, physics, statistics and computing skills.

About the speaker: Dr. Sunish Menon is an experienced data science leader, statistician and physicist with a demonstrated history of innovation in insurance industry. His career started in advanced physics research in quantum optics and college level physics teaching. He later transitioned from academia into industry, working with some of the largest insurance analytics data at State Farm Insurance. Over these years, he has been a key member of various high-profile research initiatives at State Farm. His current expertise is in insurance rating plans, telematics and design/build/implementing predictive analytics solutions. Dr. Menon has various physics related academic publications and is an inventor on 30 plus insurance related patents
