Physics department hires outstanding husband-wife team to strengthen its AMO physics initiative

Sep 9, 2008

Dr. P. K. Babu and Dr. Saisudha Mallur recently joined the Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics group of our department. They both graduated from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore (India). Dr. Babu's doctoral work specialized in experimental solid state physics. Before joining the Physics Department at WIU, he worked as a Research Scientist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His past research interests focused on experimental investigations of metal nanoparticles, nanohorns, magnetic materials and superconductors. At WIU, Dr. Babu intends to establish a research program in experimental AMO physics to synthesize nano-scale materials confined in glass matrices and study their electronic properties using optical absorption and fluorescence experiments. Dr. Mallur is an experimental AMO physicist specialized in studying optical properties of rare earth doped glasses. Before joining the Physics Department at WIU, she worked as a Physics Instructor in India and later as a Post-Doctoral researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. At WIU, Dr. Mallur will be a part of the research program in experimental AMO physics to study the particle size effects on the optical properties of nano particles and glasses doped with rare earth ions.

Babu and Sudha, welcome to the team!
