Academic Honors Convocation

Western Illinois University recognizes the outstanding academic achievement of baccalaureate degree candidates each fall and spring semester at its Academic Honors Convocation ceremonies. Baccalaureate degree candidates are recognized and awarded medallions based on the following criteria:
Academic Distinction

Baccalaureate degree candidates who meet university academic distinction requirements may graduate as Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude, or Summa Cum Laude.

  • Cum Laude : 3.60 to 3.74 GPA for all work completed
  • Magna Cum Laude : 3.75 to 3.89 GPA for all work completed
  • Summa Cum Laude : 3.90 or higher GPA for all work completed

Departmental Scholar
Departmental Scholars are outstanding degree candidates in the majors as determined by the faculty in the department.

College Scholar
Each of the academic colleges/areas selects a graduating senior as its outstanding student. College Scholars represent Arts & Sciences, Business & Technology, Centennial Honors College, Education & Human Services, Fine Arts & Communications, and Libraries.
