Pre-Engineering

Students may complete an honors curriculum in University Honors, Departmental Honors, or General Honors.  All Honors students must complete the one-hour honors colloquium (GH 299).  General Honors includes General Honors coursework.  Departmental Honors includes honors work in the major.  University Honors combines Departmental and General Honors. 

Honors students in Pre-Engineering fulfill the requirements of a dual degree program involving WIU and an Engineering college such as that at the University of Illinois, Iowa State University, Bradley University, etc.

For this program, a student must complete the following WIU courses: Math 133, Math 134, Math 231, Math 333, Physics 197, Physics 200, Physics 201, Chemistry 201, Chemistry 202, Computer Science 245, and either Math 311 or IE&T 105, which are required for Pre-Engineering.

Grade Requirements

  • 3.4 overall GPA

General Honors Requirements

  • Two General Honors seminars (6 semester hours)
  • An honors section of the First Year Experience (3 semester hours) (a General Honors seminar may be substituted in some cases)
  • GH 299 (one semester hour)

Departmental Honors Requirements

  • GH 299
  • 10 semester hours of honors credit in two departments from among the following:
  • Math 197, Math 297, Math 397, Chem 201, Chem 202, CS 245, Phys 197, Phys 198, Phys 200, Phys 201, or Phys 220

University Honors

  • Two General Honors seminars (6 semester hours)
  • An honors section of the First Year Experience (in some cases a General Honors seminar may be substituted)
  • GH 299
  • 10 semester hours of honors credit in two departments from among the following:
  • Math 197, Math 297, Math 397, Chem 201, Chem 202, CS 245, Phys 197, Phys 198, Phys 200, Phys 201, or Phys 220
