Honors Summer Session

G H 299: Explorations in Sustainability
Summer 2011

The course is designed as a point of departure in studying broad sustainability issues and for beginning personal and local sustainability projects. The goal of the course is to acquaint students with the wide range of sustainability issues while also critically examining various meanings of “sustainability.” Textbook and online readings for critical thinking and discussion and regular expert guest speakers from WIU academic and administrative areas introduce points of view and models for inquiry. Thematic discussions, a class portfolio, and modest sustainability planning will test ideas. Short lectures point to and invite ways of addressing course questions while class discussion will help the class to entertain a variety of disciplinary and personal perspectives. Frequent field trips will have students experience examples of local sustainability efforts.
