Getting a Handle on Academic Integrity
On September 12, 2008, Bob Intrieri, CAGAS Chair, moderated a C.H.A.T. session regarding the Student Academic Integrity policy and issues surrounding cheating in our society.
Highlights and Points of Discussion
I. Student Academic Integrity Policy and Reporting Procedures
There is confusion regarding what faculty member has to do when faced with issues of academic dishonesty.
Faculty should file an Academic Integrity Incidence Report every time they encounter cheating, plagiarism, or complicity even if the instance is dealt with at the faculty-student level. Reporting an incident is not punitive action on a student. Faculty face potential for appeals if they impose a punishment for cheating without reporting the incident or following reporting procedures. See the procedures outlined in the online Student Academic Integrity Policy for details.
Administrators should encourage, not discourage, reporting and eliminate any fears the faculty may have regarding repercussions or likelihood of student appeals.
Faculty should attempt to be clear and precise in their syllabus regarding the consequences of academic dishonesty.
> Include reference to the policy website and add specific details regarding potential penalties for cheating, plagiarism, and complicity.
Academic Integrity is still the responsibility of students. They must be aware of and subscribe to the policy as stated.
II. How do we deal with changing culture towards plagiarism and cheating?
Students have different views of cheating...they don't seem to be aware.
WIU needs a consistent message to students regarding Academic Integrity from faculty, libraries, administrators.
Incoming high school students seem more aware of plagiarism and have been in classes that use plagiarism checkers such as Turn It In. If students know that they are under scrutiny, they typically will comply.
Safe Assign will be a tool available to faculty within Western Online. CITR will offer workshops in coming months once the tool is stable.
III. What are some ways WIU can promote Academic Integrity?
Suggest a future University Theme?
CITR provide faculty and student development?
Suggest that faculty use learning contracts?
Create and have students sign an Honor Code?
Beef up the information provided to students during Summer Orientation?
