Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) – WIU Outstanding Small Organization for Second Year in a Row!

The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) was chosen as the WIU Outstanding Small Organization for the second year in a row. Student members completed a wide and extensive variety of professional development and service activities during the 2013-2014 academic year. Officers include: Brooke Schafer, President, Lacey Busby, Secretary, and Leah Newton, Treasurer. Dr. Mary Jensen is the advisor for CEC.

Severe Tornado Outbreak Hits Illinois

WIU Faculty Working to Improve Tornado Response and Recovery

Once a tornado strikes and damage has occurred, the reaction of emergency personnel is vital. WIU Emergency Management Assistant Professor Jack Rozdilsky has done extensive research on how to improve response and recovery to tornado disasters. He has studied the aftermath of the Harrisburg (IL) 2012 EF-4 tornado disaster, and his recent efforts focus on the Washington (IL) November 2013 tornado.

CPR Anytime Kit

CPR Anytime Kits

Joanna Graham, HS, received a donation from the American Heart Association for 600 CPR Anytime Kits valued at over $20,000.  With the help of her husband, Dr. Ralph Graham (KIN) and Cathy McMillian (KIN), the kits will be distributed to McDonough County schools, community groups and various agencies.

After a national review of Reserve Officers’ Training Corps programs across the nation by the U.S Department of Defense, WIU’s ROTC program passed.  The efficiency of taxpayers dollars are examined which Lieutenant Colonel John Drew says WIU’s ROTC does well. The quality and quantity of graduating cadets are assessed and if standards are not met, programs are destined to close.  Lieutenant Colonel Drew states, “WIU has a very viable program and is doing great things with the army and we don’t expect this to have any impact on our future operations.
