Grade Point Requirements
Importance of GPA
While minimum major and cumulative GPA's are required in the program, a high GPA is critical when seeking a teaching position. Principals who hire teachers look closely at the grade point average of candidates during the initial screening of applications. Earning a high cumulative and major GPA increases the likelihood that candidates are invited to begin the interview process in a school district.
Pre-Elementary Education Majors (prior to admittance into the Teacher Education Program)
A cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 2.5 is needed to enroll in ELED 170, ELED 270 and LLA 313.
Elementary Education Majors (admittance into and continuance in the Teacher Education Program)
A cumulative and major GPA of 2.75 is required to enroll in any program coursework during the junior and senior year and to be eligible for student teaching.
GPA Requirements for Student Teaching in the Chicago Suburbs:
A minimum cumulative and major GPA of 3.0 is required for candidates seeking to complete student teaching in the Chicago suburbs. School districts will not consider applications from candidates who do not meet this requirement.
