Ability Diversity

The Ability Diversity area of study is ideal for those that are planning on pursuing careers in almost any aspect of sport and physical activity. By learning about disability, injury, social and cultural differences that exist in persons competing, participating and/or training in sport and physical activity these students will be able to advocate for the appropriate programs, appropriate facilities, and appropriate equipment so that all persons are provided opportunities to participate in physical activity. The Ability Diversity area is most beneficial for those who aspire to become: programming specialists at any type of fitness and/or recreational facility, advocates for the Americans with Disabilities Act within corporate and/or collegiate setting, coaches for all types of athletes, occupational and physical therapists, athletic trainers, personal trainers, and wellness coaches.

This series of courses is designed to prepare students to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of abilities and differences in people and their participation in sport and physical activity
  • Advocate for persons with varying skills, abilities, experiences, backgrounds within and around sport and physical activity
  • Demonstrate skills needed for coaching certifications with various disability sport organizations
  • Implement the ideals of the universal design theory within sport and fitness facilities and sport organizations
  • Explain and evaluate the accessibility of fitness facilities for persons with disabilities
  • Demonstrate an understanding of societal cultures within and around sport and physical activity
  • Discuss the theory of stigma and how it impacts participation in sport and physical activity
  • Discuss the impact of injury and disability one's percep
  • Create exercise plans that are inclusive for all individuals and be prepared for the ACSM/NCHPAD Certified Inclusive Fitness Trainer
