Wix.com – Simpler, Faster, Better Way For You To Create Flash Web Content

By: Josh Butcher, Interactive Multimedia Lab/Technology Resource Checkout Manager

Wix.com was created in February of 2006 and an open beta was released in June of 2008 by Giora Kaplan, Avishai Abrahami, and Nadav Abrahami.  They wanted a way to make creating high quality Flash websites and other web content faster, easier and search engine friendly.  Their offices are headquartered in New York and Tel-Aviv.  Wix.com is FREE to use however they do have Premium Upgrade features that allow users to use their own domain, remove Wix branding, and add additional storage and bandwidth.  All of the website creation is done in the intuitive drag & drop editor, no programming skills are necessary to make the Flash-based content.  All Wix websites are search engine friendly.  Behind each Wix website there is HTML code that allows search engines to search your content and rank your pages accordingly.  You have the ability to manage keywords, descriptions and meta-tag information from the Settings in the editor.  When you publish your finished site you will be given a Wix URL that you can share with everyone!

Wix offers the creation of websites from available designed templates or you can choose a blank template to begin your web creation from scratch.  Their template categories that would be relative to COEHS departments and their students are Photography, Design & Art, Fashion, Food & Drinks, Lifestyle, Transportation, and Kids.  Wix is a great way for your students to create digital portfolios and mock websites related to their future career such as a fashion site, restaurant site, day care or classroom site, tourism or park site, health club or personal trainer site, etc.

To sign up and begin creating your Wix websites, go to http://www.wix.com and click on the Login/Signup link in the upper right corner of the page.  Click on the Sign Up link if you haven’t registered already.  It will just ask you to put in an email address and a password.  This is all you need to sign up, it doesn’t ask you your name, age, or any other details about yourself like some other places do.  Once you have signed up you are ready to Wix wild!
