TechTip:  MyFitnessPal

By Paul Schouten, Instructional Development Services Lab Assistant

MyFitnessPal is an excellent way to track food intake as well as exercise. You have the ability to track how many calories you have taken in throughout the day, but another very helpful aspect of the mobile app is tracking daily macronutrients.

While viewing your food diary for the day, there is a place to view your detailed macronutrient intake of carbohydrates, protein, and fat for the day near the bottom right of the diary.

The icon looks like a small pie chart and upon opening this icon, you will be presented with a detailed view of your ratio of carbohydrates to protein to fats for the day. You can use this tool to track the percentages for each macronutrient per day.

While viewing the calorie breakdown for the day, you have the option to go further in depth to see exactly how much of each macronutrient, vitamins, and minerals you have had throughout the day. This is found near the top right of the calorie breakdown screen to the left of the pie chart icon.

This screen breaks down your nutrition for the day. From here, you can view how much of each part of your daily nutrition you have had throughout the day. It also breaks it down in terms of the goals you have set up and how much of each substance you need for the day to complete your goals.

By Corey James, Instructional Development Services Graduate Assistant

Knowmia Teach is a free app that allows teachers and students to record their lesson plans, allowing others to view them. You can create your lesson plans using different slides and several tools that allow you create various shapes and text. You are also able to import pictures and videos to include within your lessons. When you are recording your lesson plans you are able to record your voice and move or add items within your lesson to create an animation and show students the information without making static slides.

Once teachers have created their lesson plans they are able to participate in the Knowmia Teach community and publish their lessons online. Students are also able to use this app, but they will not be able to make their videos public and they will expire after 30 days. This is a great application for teachers when they are not able to be face-to-face with their students and may need to put their lesson online. It also gives students the opportunity to view the lesson online if they missed the lecture.
