Band Alumni at Homecoming 2017

Homecoming 2017 is coming. We would appreciate it if all band alumni could read through the following information and let us know if you plan to attend, and if so, what you plan to participate in/with.

We will be communicating with our WIU Band Alums via the bands office database e-mail account as well as the Alumni Association's database of "Band" alumni. Please help us by sending this on to your Marching Leatherneck friends and let them know about Band Alumni at Homecoming, September 29-30, 2017.

We ask that you submit the completed Response Form indicating your plans to participate in this year’s homecoming/alumni band events, along with your contact information. We would appreciate updated contact information whether or not you are going to be at Homecoming, just so we have that information for future events.

Homecoming Alumni Band

Participation in the Homecoming Alumni Band involves coming to the band practice field on Friday, September 29 (encouraged, but not required) to meet current members and possibly participate in a run through of the song(s) we will be playing, and then on Sat. morning September 30 for a short rehearsal (see schedule for details). The Alumni Band will perform, of course, with the ML’s at the football game.

For this event, the band alumni will wear the official embroidered "Alumni Band" purple polo shirt along with khaki pants for the game. You may order your shirt on the Response Form we're providing. If you have a shirt from recent years, then you're "good to go" and won't need to purchase one this year. Please respond ASAP with your Registration Form so that we can send the music and order the shirts.

Band Alumni Tailgating

This is just an idea that I've been tossing around a bit. I know that occasionally in the past, we've had band alumni who were not participating in the actual alumni band do tailgating at Q-Lot. I'd like to see about developing/organizing this a little bit more, so this year, if there are any alumni who plan on coming to Homecoming and bringing a tailgating setup and who are willing to have other band alumni stop by, hang out, etc., please let me know and I'll pass the info along to the rest of the band alumni. Also, if you want people to BYO...whatever (drinks, food) or anything, let me know that too.

If this works out, it might be a nice way for band alumni to get together and socialize without having to participate in the alumni band.

Post-Game Band Alumni Gathering

Our after-game social/get together will be at Buffalo Wild Wings (1724 E. Jackson St.) from 7:00 to whenever. We ask that if you plan on attending this, please use the Registration Form so that we have an accurate idea of the number of people who will be attending and we can notify BWW how many tables and servers to have ready for us.

We have had issues in the past with people signing up and not showing up, which led to a rather uncomfortable situation last year where the staff essentially "rolled out the red carpet for us", expecting somewhere around the 25 people who had signed up, but we only had around 10 alumni there.

We're not going to institute people putting down a "deposit" or anything, but if you put down that you are attending, I'd appreciate if you made a point to be there, or if something comes up and you are unable to (which I do understand, sometimes life gets in the way), to let me know as soon as possible. I have no problem notifying BWW a couple of days before Homecoming that...for example, we'll only have 15 people rather than 20...I just want them to know and be prepared.

20 Years of Mr./Dr. Kevin Nichols

He's Dr. Nichols now, but for many of us when we marched, he was Mr. Nichols, or just Kevin. Whatever you call him, this fall marks 20 years of Dr. Nichols teaching percussion at Western and teaching the Marching Leathernecks Drumline. We'd like to make an effort to specifically invite all ML Alumni percussionists to try to make it back to recognize his years of service to his students and to the university. I know that I don't have contact info for a lot of the percussionists, so I'd really appreciate it if all you drum line folks could forward this information along to anyone else that you marched with that you are still in contact with.

Plan to be with us for a great weekend of playing music, reminiscing, getting re-acquainted, and meeting other Marching Leathernecks alumni. We’ll make our plans for next year and work toward getting more alums to join us for a weekend of being a part of the Marching Leathernecks again! Feel free to contact me ( or University Bands if you have any questions.

Thanks for all of your past contributions to the ML’s, and we encourage you to get involved again to shape a better tomorrow for all Marching Leatherneck Alumni.
