Do I have to be a music major to participate in the Marching Leathernecks?
No. In fact, over 70% of the members of our band are non-music majors. Being a non-major doesn't mean you are a non-player! If you had fun playing in high school, come join us and continue that great feeling which is marching band.
What experience do I need to have in order to become a member?
Most students can become a member if they've had any experience in instrumental music in high school. Chances are you'll have a spot in our band. Many of our members have never marched before. If you are anxious to learn, we are anxious to teach you. Simply call University Bands (309-298-1505) and we will place you on our mailing list.
Does marching band take up a lot of time?
We think the average student will find that participation in The Marching Leathernecks takes less time than in high school. We rehearse Tue., Thur., and Fri. from 4:15-6:15, a time when most students are fairly inactive. We never schedule extra rehearsals. The band usually has eight or nine weekends of scheduled performances, five or six of which are Leatherneck Football and the other weekends for traveling to parades, festivals, etc.
Why should I join?
We are confident that you will find this organization to be one of the most rewarding musical and social experiences you will have as a student at Western Illinois University. You will meet new friends, get to move into your dorm early, go on all expenses paid trips, witness some great football games and receive class credit to do so.
What does the band do in addition to performing for football?
The "Marching Leathernecks" has great respect across the WIU campus. We are invited to perform on campus for the New Student Convocation, Field Of Dreams, and the WIU Homecoming Parade. The ensemble has also made appearances at the following off-campus venues: Canton Friendship Festival, Rock Island Labor Day Parade, Kewanee Hog Days Parade, Bands Of America Regional Championships (St. Louis and Indianapolis), high school marching band competitions, NFL games, and WIU away football games. It is just a great opportunity to perform for a lot of people!
