Broadcasting and Journalism

NEWS3 is the student news organization advised by News Coordinator Jasmine Crighton. NEWS3 staff produces, directs, anchors and reports for three weekly shows a semester, in addition to special programming that is created on a semester-by-semester basis.

The award-winning "Live at 4" is one of those student-produced newscasts. The show airs live every semester twice a week on local channel 3 and on NEWS3's YouTube channel.

The 30-minute newscast has won several awards, including "Best Video Newscast" from the National Broadcasting Society in 2014. In 2015, "Live at 4" was a finalist in the same category. In 2014, the Illinois News Broadcasters Association awarded first place to NEWS3 "Live at 4" in the "Outstanding Television Newscast" category. In 2015, NEWS3 "Live at 4" was recognized for its excellence once again, taking first place for "Outstanding Hard TV News Program."

An additional show, "Good Morning Macomb," highlights entertainment news and live interviews with notable people in the community. GMM airs for 30 minutes once a week, and is coordinated by juniors and seniors with news producing experience and is staffed by many student volunteers.

"Good Morning Macomb" took first place, as well, for "Outstanding Soft Television Program."

In addition to the newscasts, many students have been recognized individually for their work on the newscasts, both in front of the camera and behind. In 2015, a broadcasting major from Elgin, IL, won "best animation, graphics and special effects" for his work on the student-produced newscasts, NEWS3 "Live at 4" and NEWS3 "Good Morning Macomb." He received a Student Television Award by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Mid-America chapter.
