Bill Bradshaw Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Bill Bradshaw Memorial Scholarship was established in the fall of 1985 by the Exchange Club of Quincy in honor of former Exchange Club member and journalist Bill Bradshaw. Bill Bradshaw was a former Quincy Herald Whig reporter and columnist from 1966 to 1981. Previously, he was the editor of The Quill, his family's weekly newspaper in La Harpe, for 32 years. Bill Bradshaw began working at The Quill full-time in the summer of 1936 and was named editor one week later. After his father's death in 1950, Bradshaw jointly operated The Quill with his brother until 1966. After Bill Bradshaw moved to Quincy, his brother, H. Byers Bradshaw, operated The Quill until 1972 when it was sold.

Bill Bradshaw was well known for his two weekly columns: "Quincy and Her People," which featured local personalities and "People, Places and Things," in which he related his views on life, both serious and humorous. Bill Bradshaw retired and moved back to his hometown of La Harpe, IL, where he died on October 7, 1985, after an illness of several months. Since the start of the scholarship fund, Mrs. Lois Bradshaw, Bill's wife, has made significant contributions and is responsible for raising the endowment level. She and her daughter have also remained very interested in the selection of the recipients.
