WGEM Broadcasting and Journalism Scholarship

WGEM and Western Illinois University's Department of Broadcasting and Journalism have a long history of partnerships. This scholarship award will begin in the spring semester of 2017 in the amount of $500. Following this award, the scholarship will be given each year as long as the funds are available. Students may apply for the award each academic year in the fall after the initial spring 2017 scholarship. This award will be drawn from annual contributions received from the donor, WGEM.

CRITERIA:

  • Sophomores, Juniors, or Seniors enrolled full-time and pursuing a degree in Broadcasting or Journalism
  • Student should be in good academic standing
  • Preference to a student with demonstrated participation in broadcasting activities

TERMS:

  • This scholarship will be awarded as $500 in the fall semester and $500 in the Spring semester as long as funds are available.

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • The Department of Broadcasting and Journalism Chair, in conjunction with the department scholarship committee, will choose the recipient.

Broadcasting & Journalism Banquet Scholarship

This scholarship was created to recognize an outstanding broadcasting & journalism student(s) at the annual Broadcasting & Journalism banquet. The recipient(s) will be chosen by the Broadcasting & Journalism scholarship selection committee. The amount of the award will be determined by the committee.

CRITERIA:

  • Quality and quantity of Broadcasting or Journalism activities
  • GPA in Broadcasting or Journalism major
  • Prepare and send Thank You note to the scholarship provider
  • Must be enrolled as an undergraduate in Fall 2018

TERMS:

  • $100.00 per semester, for a maximum of two semesters
  • Awarded for academic year 2018-2019

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • Selection will be made April 2018

Broadcasting Scholarships Available

The Broadcasting Faculty & Alumni Scholarship

This scholarship was created by the Fall 2012 Broadcasting faculty in response to 1) the need to find monies to recruit incoming freshman to the department, and 2) the Faculty/Staff campaign to support the university Capital Campaign.

This scholarship will be funded initially with contributions from the Broadcasting faculty and staff. Subsequent contributions to keep the scholarship viable will be made by the Broadcasting faculty and staff as well as Broadcasting Alumni and other donors. This scholarship will be used to recruit incoming freshmen to the Broadcasting major. This award is intended as a $1,000 award payable in equal halves in each semester ($500 in the fall and $500 in the spring). Awards will be applied to the recipient's WIU account. The spring award can be terminated in the event the student changes his/her major. Broadcasting Faculty will review the applicants and decide on one student recipient based on the strength of the application.

CRITERIA:

  • Must be a declared Broadcasting major
  • Must be an incoming freshmen
  • Must have WIU housing contract and select the Broadcasting Living Learning Community floor as his/her housing option
  • Must include his/her SAT/ACT score and high school grade point average in the application
  • Essay on what they feel they can contribute to the broadcasting field
  • Submit documentation of current experience in broadcasting (audio, video, scripting) on CD or DVD

David Lumley Scholarship

TERMS:

The award amount will be determined by the annual interest rate on the endowment. One award is to be given. In any year in which there are no qualified applicants, income may be accumulated or reinvested in the endowment at the discretion of the administrator of the fund.

CRITERIA:

  • Must be a declared Broadcasting major
  • Junior class level at the time the scholarship is given
  • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrated involvement in broadcasting activities, such as yearbook, newspaper, TV, special projects, etc.

TERMS:

  • The award amount will be determined by the annual interest rate on the endowment. One award is to be given.

Illinois Broadcasters Association Scholarship

This scholarship was created in January, 2001 by the Illinois Broadcasters Association to recognize the top student in the department with emphasis on a rising senior majoring in Broadcasting. The amount of the award is $750.00 payable in equal disbursements ($375 in the fall and $375 in the spring). The recipient of this award will be selected in the spring.

CRITERIA:

  • Must be a rising senior student pursuing a B.A. degree in Broadcasting.
  • Must have a minimum of 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.5 in Broadcasting.
  • Must have completed a minimum of 90 semester hours at the end of Spring, 2018 semester.
  • Recipient should demonstrate talent, commitment, excellence and professional ambition in broadcasting.
  • The scholarship shall be awarded to the top student (as determined by the Broadcasting and Journalism scholarship committee). If more than one student is considered qualified, preference shall be given to a student with demonstrated participation in broadcasting activities.
  • Must attend the IBA-U Conference in the Fall 2018.

TERMS:

  • $425.00 per semester, for a maximum of two semesters
  • Awarded for academic year 2018-2019.

  • Selection will be made by May 2018.

TERMS:

Award amount is based on annual interest earnings on the endowment. Awards will be given in the Fall semester and in the Spring semester of each academic year.

CRITERIA:

  • Junior pursuing a B.A. degree in Broadcasting, specializing in television
  • Student should be in good academic standing
  • Demonstrate creative talent, commitment, leadership and professional ambition in television broadcasting

Stephanie Wilson Memorial Scholarship

CRITERIA:

  • Must be a rising senior student pursuing a B.A. degree in Broadcasting.
  • Must have a minimum of 2.5 overall GPA and a 3.0 in Broadcasting.

Journalism Scholarships Available:

Bill Bradshaw Memorial Scholarship Fund

TERMS:

This scholarship is valued at $1000.00 and will be awarded in two payments: fall and spring semester.

CRITERIA:

  • Must be a journalism/print media major
  • Junior standing with at least 60 semester hours completed at WIU.
  • Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who resident in the circulation area of either the Quincy Herald Whig or the LaHarpe Quill which includes the counties of Adams, Pike, Hancock, Schuyler, McDonough, Brown, Calhoun, Henderson, and Warren in Illinois and Lee and Des Moines in Iowa and Marion, Clark, Lewis, Pike, Schuyler, Morgan, Ralls, Adair, Macon, Scotland, Monroe, Shelby, and Know in Missouri. If no applicants are available from the preferred counties, other Illinois residents who meet the other criteria may be awarded the scholarship.

Dameris Bagwell Journalism Scholarship

TERMS:

$250 to be applied to the student's university account. Award can be given in the fall semester or can be split ½ fall and ½ spring.

CRITERIA:

  • African American Student
  • At least sophomore class level during the semester of award.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA in major or 2.75 overall GPA

The Kenneth L. Dixon Memorial Scholarship

TERMS:

This scholarship is valued at $500.00 and will be awarded.

CRITERIA:

  • Must be a high school senior who plans to major in mass communication with an area of concentration in print media (journalism).
  • Applicants must have a composite ACT score of 26 or better and rank in the top 20% of high school graduating class.
  • Preference will be given to a Colchester resident, followed by a graduate of any McDonough County high school. If there is no applicant available from the above locations, a student from any other Illinois high school who satisfies the other criteria may be awarded this scholarship.

APPLICATION PROCESS:

Applications should be available in the Guidance Counselors Office of the participating high schools and should be returned to Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois by April fifteenth of the student's senior year in high school.

Applications are also available in the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism for Entering Freshman.

SELECTION PROCESS:

Johnson Journalism Fund Scholarship

TERMS:

Award amount will be determined by the Department of Broadcasting and Journalism.

CRITERIA:

  • The fund can be used for students by themselves or in activities that directly benefits them.
  • The form will be completed and approved by the journalism director and the department chair.
  • The funds can be given to students to pay the full or partial cost of registration to a professional conference or pay for the full or partial cost of organizing an activity on behalf of a journalism student organization including SPJ, PRSSA, NABJ, or WAF.
  • If the fund is given to a student, he or she must be a journalism major or minor with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or more.

The Sigfred, Jeanette and Dean Johnson Scholarship in English and Journalism

TERMS:

Amount of each award is $1000 to be disbursed 1/2 fall and 1/2 spring, usually to the student's university account.

CRITERIA:

  • One scholarship each will be given to:
    • An undergraduate student majoring in English
    • An undergraduate student majoring in Journalism
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA at WIU or transfer 3.0 GPA for new transfers
  • Preference is for an underrepresented minority who has proven financial need
  • An essay submitted from an English or Journalism class

TERMS:

Annually one scholarship of $300.00 will be awarded to one student.

CRITERIA:

  • Junior or senior standing
  • GPA 3.0 or higher
  • Currently enrolled in or has already taken at least one Public Relations Course
  • Must be a journalism, communication, broadcasting, English or business course
  • Preferably has been a member of the public relations organization for at least one semester.
