On Homecoming Night the Western Illinois University Madrigal Singers and University Singers conducted by Dr. James Stegall will present their Fall Choral Concert entitled “WATER.”  We all recognize that water is an extremely powerful element that permeates our lives in many ways.  In fact, being near rivers and lakes as we are in rural Illinois often invokes spiritual experiences that prove soothing to the body, mind and soul.  It is in this light we seek to celebrate our relationship with water with choral selections spanning the Renaissance to present via instances of tears, rivers, thirst, and even boats.  The Madrigal Singers and University Singers are highly auditioned choral ensembles comprising Western Illinois University’s finest students.

Tears

Salve Regina - plainchant, c. 9th century

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy,
our life, our sweetness, and our hope.
To you we cry, the children of Eve,
to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping
in this land of exile.

Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
your eyes of mercy toward us;
lead us home at the beginning and show us
the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus:

O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

Weep, O Mine Eyes - John Bennet (1575-1614)

Die mit Tränen säen warden mit Freuden ernten - Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672)

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
They go out with weeping, bearing precious seed,
and come back in joy, bearing their sheaves.

When Jesus Wept - William Billings (1746-1800)

Zigeunerlieder, Op. 103, No1 - Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

Hey, Gypsy, strike upon your strings!
Play the song of the faithless young girl!
Let the strings weep complain, sadly quiver,
Until the hot tears flow down this cheek!

Drop, drop, slow tears - Graham Ross (b. 1985)
