Broadcasting Students to Intern at Beijing Olympics
Elizabeth Bales, senior Sherrard, and Lindsay O'Connell, senior Plainfield, have been selected as NBC broadcasting interns for the 2008 Olympics. The interns will spend approximately 4-1/2 weeks in Beijing this August assisting with the 2008 Olympics. Liz was also offered an internship with the Today Show this upcoming summer but declined. Lindsay is completing her internship at Comcast Sports in Chicago this spring.
As their classmate Alex Degman says, "These women getting these internships just keeps proving my point that we're not a school to be taken lightly anymore, if we even were to begin with." Nick McCay, sophomore Dalton, Georgia, was selected to participate as an intern in New York City as part of NBC's "At Home" Olympic coverage. Broadcasting was given preferential status by NBC/Universal's 2008 Olympics Internship Committee. Eleven students met with NBC/University Olympics personnel in Chicago in early October. Preferential status was given to only six universities by NBC this year —University of Michigan, University of Notre Dame, Syracuse University, Ithaca College, University of Southern California, and Western. The interviewers from NBC were very impressed with the quality of student applicants from Western. The Broadcasting Department is optimistic that they will be a preferential university for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
