TRI STATES PUBLIC RADIO - APRIL 2009

Tri States Public Radio "Pledge and Plant" Campaign

Tri 1

Tri States Public Radio concluded it's on-air spring membership drive April 5th with $53,770 pledged and 537 hardwood saplings to be planted at Lake Argyle State Park (a tree for every $100 raised)! A big tip of the hat to our partners at the Illinois Tree Farm Committee, especially Chairman Jack Wohlstadter and Illinois District Forester Barrie McVey.

Listeners pledged in record numbers during the special "Power Breakfast" during the Monday broadcast of Morning Edition! Special thanks to all the generous members who made additional donations before the drive, creating a Member Match pool -- incentives which encouraged others to give. Because of your generosity, we were able to raise $13,540 in just three hours and take off the rest of the day! Thanks, one and all!

You don't have to wait for a membership drive to become a member of Tri States Public Radio. A pledge of any amount that's right for you truly does make a difference. Join any time, day or night at tristatesradio.com.

Edward R. Murrow Awards

Tri States Public Radio picked up two prestigious Edward R. Murrow Awards from the Radio and Television News Directors Association. For the fifth year in a row, News Director Rich Egger's entry in the category "Use of Sound" was the best in a four state region (Illinois, Ohio, Michigan and Indiana). Here's a recap of the award-winning stories along with links to listen.

Tri 2

From the Field to the Kitchen to the Plate

A Murrow winner for "Use of Sound," this feature was the final installment of the four-part series "Local Foods - A Growing Trend." Focusing on a local foods dinner, it follows food from the field to the kitchen to the plate, with sound bringing listeners to each location. Listeners heard cows mooing, produce picked from the plant, a busy kitchen, and a crowded dining room complete with a big round of applause for the chef. The story was produced by News Director Rich Egger. Read More

Tri 3

Small Towns Battle the Big River

The Murrow winner in the "Documentary" category, this half hour program chronicled the rising waters during the Great Flood of 2008 and what it was like as the Mississippi River finally started to recede. Listeners heard from regular folks who tried to save their homes. The program explains where all the sand for sandbags came from - and what happened to it after the flood. Listeners also learned about the flood museum that ended up under flood waters. News Director Rich Egger and reporters Jason Parrott and Julie Root produced the stories in the program. Read More
