DIAMONDS & DENIM 2009

diamond-denim

The Performing Arts Society and the Macomb Community celebrated summer with the annual Diamonds and Denim event at the Change of Pace on August 8, 2009. And once again, the highlight of the evening was the drawing for the winner of the 1 carat diamond donated by Sue Melton of the Diamond Den.

This year's winner was Larry Pickett, associate professor, military science. Sue's generosity has made one more lucky winner very happy. Thank you again to Sue Melton and the Performing Arts Society and congratulations to Larry and Julie-Anne Pickett!

  • See the University Theatre production of Moliere's madcap, farcical comedy The Miser — October 14 to October 17, 7:30 PM, Hainline Theatre. Tickets available at Hainline Box Office 309.298.2900.

A coughing sexagenarian whose every thought, word, and action is determined by greed, Harpagon is one of Molière's most notorious characters. For more than three centuries, audiences have been charmed by the skinflint's obsessive scrimping and disturbed by the consequences of his avarice. Harpagon's frenzied antics give The Miser its comic momentum, but the character also casts a dark shadow on the play. His financial paranoia is as unsettling as it is entertaining.

TWO MUSIC STUDENTS RECEIVE NAMM INTERNSHIPS

SOM Intern

Kathleen Sieracki and Daniel Reem, will each spend 6-month internships with NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants), the International Music Products Association, next year in Carlsbad, CA. Kathy, will be there from August 1, 2009 to January 31, 2010 and Dan from February 1 to July 31, 2010. They receive pay as well as housing during their internships.

Both are students of Courtney Blankenship whose encouragement and letters of recommendation helped them to receive these prestigious internships. According to the internship agreement,

The NAMM internship program is designed to offer NAMBI (National Association of Music Merchants-Affiliated Music Business Institutions) students a unique alternative to the classroom curriculum of their college or university, during the term . . . . so that they may participate in the Association aspects of the music products industry. The purpose of this internship is to offer students insight into how the Association works with respect to administration, information technology, market development, marketing and communications, meetings and events, membership services, professional development and trade shows.

STUDENT DEVELOPMENT ORIENTATION LEADERS SOAR

The Orientation Team (O-Team) is an elite group of 12 student leaders who assist with the Summer Orientation and Registration programs as well as Fall Orientation. And 7—that's right SEVEN or over half of the O-Team—are COFAC majors. Members of the Orientation Team gain a valuable career-enhancing leadership experience while assisting new students and their families in their Western Illinois University transition. O-Team members present and facilitate small group discussions, perform a series of campus life vignettes, serve as a guide and a resource person for incoming students and families and play an active roll in planning and coordinating Fall Orientation.
