COFAC AT OBAMA INAUGURATION
Music Alum Jason Sivill (1999) and current Communication Science and Disorders senior Viola Marrs have inauguration stories.
WIU alum Jason Sivill rehearsing the Punahou Marching Band in DC
Jason Sivill's story begins for us when faculty member Terry Solomonson casually mentioned he had heard a WIU music education alum on National Public Radio.
Terry said he had heard Jason Sivill on NPR talking about his band students marching in the Inauguration Parade—his Punahou High School Marching Band!
That's right, President Obama's alma mater in Honolulu, Hawaii. So if you heard the NPR story, and you were a classmate of Jason's, yes it is the same Jason Sivill!
Punahou Marching Band
Turns out Jason is the band director at Punahou and took the Punahou Marching Band to Washington DC to lead the Obama Inauguration parade. You may have seen President Obama giving the band the Hawaiian "shaka" (according to Wikipedia "a common greeting gesture") from the reviewing stand.
Hear the NPR story and we promise there is more to this story. As they say, stay tuned. When the dust settles and Jason has a few spare minutes, he promises to fill us in with more specifics.

Viola Marrs Goes to Washington
Viola Marrs, COFAC College Scholar fall 2008 and CSD senior, attended the University Presidential Inaugural Conference (UPIC) in Washington, DC Jan. 17-21st, 2009. Viola was nominated by Golden Key International Honor Society and chosen by the UPIC committee to attend. She received outstanding support from the Communication Sciences and Disorders department, Disability Support Services and the Panhellenic Council.

Luke Russert (Tim Russert's son) spoke to the attendees at an introductory dinner the first night. On the 18th the UPIC attendees went to the University of Maryland where Colin Powell spoke. Additional seminars included speakers Paul
Begala and Tucker Carlson together, and Mary Matalin (WIU alum 1978) and James Carville together. Mars attended the Inaugural Opening Ceremony titled "We are One" including various acting, singing, and entertainment talent highlighted by the appearance of President-elect Obama. On January 19, the UPIC went back to University of Maryland where Al Gore spoke.
On January 20, Marrs was in attendance as President Obama and Vice President Biden took their oaths of office, and that evening she attended the UPIC Gala at the Smithsonian National Air and Space museum. A local DC band hosted the event. There were over one hundred Balls and Galas throughout DC that evening.

COMM CAREER PREPARATION DAY
Seven WIU alums joined forces to present a successful Department of Communication Career Preparation Day on Tuesday, February 3rd.
Over 140 Communication majors and minors met at the University Union to learn about interviewing, networking, job seeking, and transitioning from college student to full-time employee.
Because of a generous donation from Department of Communication Alumnus, Bill Paulding, all attendees were treated to a midday lunch and keynote address. Read More

BROADCASTING "STUCK IN THE 70's REUNION"
Those broadcasting alums are a busy bunch. Looks like they are organizing a reunion and they want you to join them. Scott Reid, 1978 BA mass communication grad—remember broadcasting was part of communication then—is the organizer. If you haven't already heard from Scott, he's looking for you.
See Scott's message below.

Greetings!
Do you ever wonder what happened to all those great people you knew from the Broadcasting Department at WIU? Well, now you can find out. Join us for the "Stuck in the '70s Reunion" and reconnect with that part of your past that you remember fondly…or otherwise!
Here's a tentative schedule of events. Subject to change of course!
Friday April 24th Broadcasting Department Banquet 5PM-8PM
This is the annual banquet. The Department will probably give somebody from our generation an award. It's mostly for the students, but they would love to have alumni attend. Broadcasting would like to create a connection between current students and alumni. This is totally optional, but I've been to one and it's a good time.
Friday April 24th Meet and Greet at the Pace 8PM-Closing Time
This will be the place where people can hook up. Typical Macomb bar scene with a nice courtyard.
Saturday April 25th "Stuck in the '70s" @WIUS Noon-2 PM
I will probably host a radio show. I want people to come by and have some fun. We'll play some records and do some interviews with people who stop by. Should be fun.
Saturday April 25th Tour TV Station & WIUM 1 PM
Broadcasting wants to make sure that everyone sees what the TV station has become. They are very proud of their facility and their van. People may also want to see what WIUM looks like. Kenny Thurman runs it now.
Saturday April 25th Uptown Pub Crawl 8PM
We'll meet at some bar... and go from there.
Sunday April 26th Goodbye Breakfast 10AM
Not exactly sure how to do this. But we'll figure something out.
Needless to say, the more people that show up for this thing the better it will be. Unfortunately we don't have a complete list of alumni, so don't hesitate to contact any classmates you might know. And if you need help in locating some long lost broadcasters, drop me a note and I will see if I can find them through the university.
That's all for now. So help me get the word out…and if you have any suggestions on how to make this a bigger success…by all means let me know! I look forward to seeing you soon!
