The Western Hornist Performances

The Knox-Sandburg Community Concert Band—conducted by Laurel Filzen Etzel—performed Randall Faust's University Scenes for Wind Ensemble on May 28th at Knox College in Galesburg. Laurel is a 2004 graduate of the WIU School of Music.

University Scenes was composed for the Centennial Convocation of Western Illinois University and was premiered at that event on April 24, 1999 by Jon Dugle and the Western Illinois University Wind Ensemble.

Four students of Randall Faust —The WIU Horn Quartet — John Reem, Robert Palmer, Amber Dean, and Colin Brien performed Robert Schumann's Konzertstück für vier hörner und orchester, Op. 86, on the WIU Symphony Orchestra Concert on April 18th.

This was the second concerto performance of the semester for WESTERN HORNIST John Reem– who also performed the Concertino by Lars-Erik Larsson with the orchestra on February 29, 2008.

Randall Faust performed the Rondo from his Concerto for Horn and Wind Ensemble, and an honor band of 9th graders from the 3 Davis, California Junior Highs performed his entire Symphony for Band.

On April 13, 2008, The Western Illinois Horn Festival was presented by The Western Illinois Horn Institute of Western Illinois University—Co-sponsored by The Illinois Arts Council and The Western Illinois Visiting Lecture Committee and the Council on Student Activities Funds. hornfest

The 2008 Festival was a celebration of the horn teaching of Michael Hatfield—who taught the horn for decades at Indiana University, the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, and the Aspen Music Festival —as well as a long performing career as a symphony hornist at Aspen, Indianapolis, and over two decades as Principal Hornist of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. As a long-standing teacher of national reputation several of his former students, significant colleagues and a number of outstanding students participated in the Festival to honor Michael Hatfield.

Piano For Life

In early May, Dr. Chung-Ha Kim, Mr. Michael Stryker and Dr. Tammie Walker presented a 2-hour workshop entitled 'Piano For Life' at West Music in Moline, Illinois. The event was attended by prospective piano students, their teachers, and their parents.
