Fink Delivers 18th Annual Thompson Lecture

fink

The Department of Communication held its Eighteenth Annual Wayne N. Thompson Lecture on Monday, March 31st. Dr. Edward Fink, professor of communication at the University of Maryland, presented his lecture, "Why is it Funny? Models of (Especially Jewish) Humor" to an audience of approximately 250 people. The lecture addressed the relationship among cognitive processing, humor, and the act of persuasion. The Thompson Lecture is free and open to the public. Dr. Fink is noted for his expertise in the study of persuasive processes and communication research methodologies. During his three day visit to campus, Dr. Fink visited several undergraduate and graduate classes and met with graduate students, faculty, and university administrators.

Each year the Department of Communication invites one of the top communication scholars to deliver a lecture for the university community. fink

The annual lecture is named in honor of Wayne N. Thompson, a WIU alumnus and noted professor of speech communication. The Thompson endowment makes possible a number of departmental programs to enhance learning and scholarship in the field of communication. In addition to the Thompson lecture, the endowment supports the Thompson professor and undergraduate scholar awards. The Thompson Professorship is awarded to a communication faculty member each year and provides financial support for the faculty member’s research. The Thompson Scholar Award is bestowed to an undergraduate student each semester. Five hundred dollars is awarded to a declared Communication major who has completed at least 90 semester hours and has achieved an overall grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students meeting these criteria are invited to apply.
