Moises Molina will be teaching cello and chamber music at the Schlern International Music Festival (June 25-July 15) in Voels am Schlern/Fie allo Sciliar, Italy.

Terry Chasteen performed as the tenor soloists in Bruckner's "Te Deum" in two concerts with the Quincy Symphony Orchestra on April 19 and 20 in Quincy and at Culver-Stockton College in Canton, MO.

At WIU's Ninth Annual Tech Fest on April 23rd, Douglas Huff gave an electronic poster presentation entitled "Classical Music Projects Created by Non-Music Majors" that included the use of electronic response pads ("clickers"). In September he will give a similar presentation at the National Conference of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction held in Atlanta, Georgia.

Anita Werling, music, was the organist for the BCA Faculty Chamber Series "Organ Plus" concert on April 2 at the First Presbyterian Church in Macomb. Performing with her on this program of American music were faculty members Tammara Phillips, flute; Lynn Thompson, baritone; John Vana, saxophone; Kitty Karn, soprano; and the Lamoine Brass Quintet (Bruce Briney and Diana Miller, trumpets; Randall Faust, horn; John Mindemann, trombone; and Terry Solomonson, tuba).

On April 16, 2008, senior Music Business major Patrick Downing gave a presentation on George Gershwin's Piano Concerto at Undergraduate Research Day. His faculty mentor was Dr. Tammie Walker.


Dr. Tammie Walker was recognized at the University Libraries 4th Annual Author Recognition Reception on April 28, 2008.

 

On May 4, 2008, Dr. Chung-Ha Kim, Prof. Michael Stryker and Dr. Tammie Walker presented a 2-hour workshop at West Music in Moline, IL entitled: Piano For Life. Attendees included prospective piano students, their parents and their teachers.

 

Dr. Tammie Walker's article entitled "The Status of the B.M. – Piano Performance Degree" was published in the April/May 2008 issue of the American Music Teacher journal.

 

April 26, 2008, COFAC Recital Hall, Wind Ensemble President's Concert, featured the WIU premiere of James Caldwell's Aubusson, and the WIU premiere of the Joseph Kreines edition of the Grieg Piano Concerto (movement I) with Dr. Tammie Walker as piano soloist.

On April 12, 2008, Dr. Julieta Mihai (Violin) and Dr. Chung-Ha Kim (Piano) performed a chamber music recital in COFAC Recital Hall. The program included a Rhapsody by Paul Paccione, a Ballade by Roumanian composer Ciprian Porumbescu, two romances and the "Kreutzer" Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven. kim


Dr. Chung-Ha Kim's article "A Holistic Approach to Teaching Repertoire: Sonata in F# Major, Op. 78 by Ludwig van Beethoven (I Adagio cantabile -- Allegro ma non troppo)" was published in the Spring 2008 issue of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association Newsletter.


 

Music faculty Bruce Briney, Rick Kurasz and Ben Harris performed a guest recital at the University of Iowa on April 3. briney kurasz harris


The performers premiered a new composition for trumpet, percussion and computer composed by music alum, George Hufnagl entitled And Still, Between.

Student News

 

Luke Kessler, senior Liberal Arts music major, and Sarah Holland, junior organ performance major, gave a guest organ recital at the Faith United Presbyterian Church in Monmouth on April 13.

 

Sarah Holland performed her Junior Organ Recital on April 19 at the First Presbyterian Church in Macomb.

 

Nine organ students of Dr. Anita Werling performed in an Organ Studio Recital on April 27 at the First Baptist Church in Macomb.

 

April 12, 2008, COFAC Recital Hall, Anna Smith (Junior, student of Dr. Walker) and Nicole Peter (Junior, student of Dr. Kim) presented a combined piano recital.

 

April 25, 2008, COFAC Recital Hall, Shoko Tayama Janssen (MM-Piano Performance, student of Dr. Walker) presented a solo recital. Works included the complete 18-movement Davidsbundlertanze of Robert Schumann, the Estampes of Claude Debussy, and Prokofiev's Sonata No. 7.

 

May 3, 2008, COFAC Recital Hall, Heidi Caldwell (Senior – Piano Performance) presented a solo piano recital. Works included a Prelude and Fugue by J.S. Bach, the "Tempest" Sonata of Beethoven, Brahms' Op. 118 Klavierstucke, and Prokofiev's Sonata No. 3.

 

Taejin Yoo, MM Piano Peformance-student of Dr. Kim, won 3rd prize in the 2008 Southern Illinois Young Artist Organization Competition on April 19.

 

Anna Smith, BM (Junior) in Choral Music Education & Piano Performance, and Nicole Peter, BM (Junior) in Piano Performance performed a combined student recital on April 12, 2008 in COFAC Recital Hall. The program included works by Georges Bizet, Franz Schubert, Samuel Barber, Domenico Scarlatti, Robert Schumann, and Francis Poulenc.
