CSD Celebrates Homecoming 2011 with a Bang!

CSD Auction
CSD Faculty celebrate the Maureen G. Marx Scholarship kick-off. Front row, Jane Brown, Maureen Marx, Donna Quesal, Amanda Silberer. Back row, Kate Pohlpeter, Ellen Ehrgott, Amy Burke, Cheri Gipson, and Bob Quesal.

Homecoming weekend for the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) was special this year. On the evening of September 30, CSD held an Open House to toast its new academic offices, state-of-the-art laboratories, and speech-language-hearing clinic all of which are now housed on the entire second floor of the newly-renovated Memorial Hall. After four years in the basement of Currens Hall, CSD completed its move to Memorial in December of 2010.

The weekend provided a huge turnout, with current CSD students, alums, current and retired CSD faculty, and members of the university community connecting and reconnecting over wonderful hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar, and excellent music by the President's String Quartet.

Honors Students
Maggie Goettsche, MDH Administrative Director of Quality & Innovation; Wanda Foster, MDH Vice President of Nursing; Shawn Spangler, Instructor, WIU Department of Art; Tim Vanginkel, BA Art 2004 and BFA Art 2005; Kenny Boyd, MDH President/CEO; Bill Howard, Professor, WIU Department of Art

McDonough District Hospital and Western Illinois University have entered into an exhibition agreement that is designed to allow the art of students, faculty and selected works from the University Art collection to be displayed in the newly renovated lobby of the Hospital. The Hospital is nearing completion of a major renovation project that is designed to improve the overall accessibility to MDH. One aspect of this project is to upgrade the overall aesthetics, or look of public spaces in hospital.

The project to use the lobby of the hospital got underway after Professor Howard, WIU Art Studio Technician Robert Brownlow, and Charles Wright, Chair of the Department of Art at Western met with the MDH Senior Leadership Team about interior upgrades in the entry space to the Hospital. Wanda Foster, RN / Vice President of Nursing and Professor Howard were the first to discuss ideas about showcasing art from Western's students and faculty in the newly renovated space. McDonough District Hospital has taken on the total cost of this renovation that will benefit Western's exhibition programming.

Wii Expands Musical, Educational Opportunities for WIU Music Professor Caldwell

Caldwell
Caldwell performed Texturologie 8b

Guitar Hero and Rock Band are ways that people can unleash their inner Slash and Eddie Van Halen personas, but the Wii can go well beyond those two popular games to be used for innovative - and educational - opportunities within music education.

Western Illinois University Music Professor James Caldwell has used computers since the 1980s to make music. A few years ago after reading an article in Electronic Musician about using the Wii to make music, he decided to try it out.

PAS Beerfest Serves it Up

PAS Beerfest
Beerfest committee members Chris McDaniel; Matt Blankenship; Stoney Jockish, Marketplace Selections Distributing; Bill Howard; and Tony Ashenhurst.

The Performing Arts Society served up a delicious and successful 3rd Annual Beerfest 2011 on October 22, 2011 at The Forum in Macomb, IL. The event featured 70 beers to over 400 attendees. Some of the beers were so hard to get–and so expensive–that they were only served for one hour during the afternoon during the Special Release Beers aspect of the event. You can see all the Beerfest pics on the Western Illinois University Visual Production Center Lightbox.

Broadcasting Student Broskowski is a Lucky Fellow

Lucky Fellow Michael Browskowski, center, and classmates Adam Studzinski, senior broadcasting major, Petersburg, IL, left, and Sean Ingrassia, senior broadcasting major, Chatham, IL, right, broadcast a WIU Leathernecks football game.

Some people are just lucky. Not lucky like lottery lucky, but lucky because ever since they can remember, they have known what they want to do. Some people know they want to be a teacher, or a fireman, or a doctor. Michael Broskowski has always known what he wants to do. He wants to be a play-by-play baseball radio announcer.

Just like his hero Cory Provus announces for the Brewers Baseball in Milwaukee, Broskowski wants to do play-by-play for baseball, but Broskowski wants to do play-by-play on the radio — not TV! And why does Broskowski want to do radio instead of TV? It's because he loves the minor league teams and the minor leagues will always be on the radio.
