Dr. Shanklin's professional career spans more than three decades. He began in 1974 teaching high school and junior high school choir. Dr. Shanklin has had experience as a full-time church music director, and has conducted choirs and taught voice at the university level for the past twenty-five years. His prior university appointments include Music Department Chair and Director of Choral Activities at Southern Utah University, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, and Director of Choral Activities at Blue Mountain College, Blue Mountain, Mississippi.

He received the Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education from Union University, the Master of Music degree in Voice Performance from Florida State University, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Choral Conducting from Arizona State University. Dr. Shanklin has also done additional graduate study in the choral, vocal and music education areas at the University of Illinois.

Choirs under Dr. Shanklin’s direction have received critical acclaim on concert tours performed in Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, California, Washington, Canada, and England. His concert tour of England included performances at Cambridge University, the University of Warwick, and St. Clement Danes Church in London. Dr. Shanklin’s Chamber Choir participated in a Carnegie Hall performance of the Mozart Requiem in January of 2004 and was invited to perform at the American Choral Directors Association’s Regional Convention in Salt Lake City. He has had experience nationally as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator.

Dr. Shanklin studied choral conducting and literature with Clayton Krehbiel, Wiley Housewright, and Colleen Kirk at Florida State University; Don Moses, Ann Howard Jones, and Chester Alwes at the University of Illinois; and David Stocker and Wallace Rave at Arizona State University. Additionally, he has had the opportunity to work with such internationally known choral conductors as Robert Shaw, Dale Warland, Paul Salamunovich, Donald Bailey, Rodney Eichenberger, Jerry McCoy, Charlene Archibeque, Charles K. Smith, and Weston Noble. Dr. Shanklin studied voice with Joseph Blass at Union University, Roy Delp at Florida State University, Ronald Hedlund at the University of Illinois, and Music Education with noted University of Illinois pedagogues Charles Leonhard and Richard Colwell.

Dr. Shanklin has been very active in the National Association of Schools of Music and serves as a Visiting Accreditation Evaluator for this national accrediting organization. Voice students from Dr. Shanklin’s studio have been successful in the National Association of Teacher of Singing(NATS) state and regional competitions. He has also served as an adjudicator for NATS state and regional student competitions, the NATS Singing Artist Auditions, and for numerous public school vocal solo competitions.
