Dr. Garwood earned her Bachelor's degree in Music Therapy from Nazareth College and Master of Music Therapy and Doctor in Philosophy in Music Therapy degrees from Temple University. She has additional training in the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM). She is a Licensed Creative Arts Therapist in the state of New York.

Her college teaching experience includes seven years as an adjunct faculty member at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. Additionally, Dr. Garwood has extensive experience as a clinical music therapist in private practice and has provided music therapy services in the areas of physical disabilities, mental health, neuro-developmental disabilities, palliative and hospice care and pediatric medicine. Dr. Garwood has a specific interest in working with children with life-threatening illnesses and their siblings.

As an undergraduate she won the E. Thayer Gaston Award, a national writing competition for music therapy students for her research "The Effect of Contingent Music in Combination with a Bell Pad on Enuresis of a Mentally Retarded Adult", published in the Journal of Music Therapy. Her dissertation "Profiles of English Language Music Therapy Journals” provided a content analysis of research in seven music therapy journals over the past 50 years, providing an objective documentation of the longitudinal growth of the music therapy field.
