Associate Professor Kitty Karn graduated from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance and holds a Master of Music Degree from The Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in Houston, Texas. She joined the WIU faculty in 2004 after having taught at Sam Houston State University, Houston Community College and San Jacinto Community College.

While living in Texas, Kitty performed with Opera in the Heights, Theatre Under the Stars, Alley Theatre, Stages Repertory Theater, Theater LaB, Main Street Theater, Masquerade Theatre. She has worked with Houston Grand Opera in several capacities including the HGO Chorus, Opera-to-Go, STARS and Opera New World. With The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Houston, she twice traveled to England to compete in the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival, for which she won Best Supporting Actress for her role as Phoebe in "The Yeomen of the Guard". Under her direction, the Society took Best Chorus for their work in "The Mikado."

At home in both Classical and Musical Theatre styles as well as straight plays, Kitty has performed in such varied roles as Madame Flora in "The Medium", Marmee in "Little Women", Nurse in "Romeo and Juliet" and Laura in "Goblin Market".

Kitty is certified in all three levels of Somatic Voicework from the CCM Institute at Shenandoah University and in 2013 became a certified instructor of Kundalini yoga, which she has practiced since 2001.
