Dr. Richard Cangro

Visit: Community Music School Richard M. Cangro, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Western Illinois University. He was formerly a band and orchestra director in Connecticut for 15 years serving the students in the Stratford and West Hartford Public Schools as well as the Hartt School Community Division, University of Hartford. Dr. Cangro received a Bachelor of Music in Trumpet Performance from the Manhattan School of Music, a Master of Music Education from the Hartt School, and a Ph.D. in Music Education also from Hartt. With his dissertation focusing on applying cooperative learning strategies to instrumental music learning, Dr. Cangro continues to investigate the nature and effects of student interaction at all levels of music learning. Dr. Cangro is active as a presenter, consultant, adjudicator, conductor, and guest teacher for developing musicianship. He has presented for several school district in-services and at numerous local, state, and national music educator conferences. During the summer of 2006, Dr. Cangro was an invited presenter for music educators in Taipei, Taiwan. Presently, he serves on the executive board for the International Association for the Study of Cooperation in Education, and on the Music Educators Journal Advisory Board. He contributes regularly to music educator publications with research interests in student-centered learning, developing musicianship, instrumental music pedagogy, and 21st century teacher preparation. At WIU, Dr. Cangro teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in music education as well as directs the Community Music School, coordinates the summer graduate program in music education, supervises student teachers, and advises the collegiate NAfME and ASTA student chapters. Dr. Cangro is the Mentoring Chair for the Illinois Music Educators Association. Musically, Dr. Cangro is the music director for the Monmouth Civic Orchestra, performs on trumpet with the Knox-Galesburg Symphony Orchestra, teaches private trumpet lessons, and conducts the WIU youth string orchestra.
