Directing String Orchestras: Effective Rehearsing and Conducting is a virtual two-day symposium designed to help high school string orchestra directors explore new rehearsal strategies and develop ways to be more effective on the podium. The curriculum will include presentations and discussions related to rehearsing, conducting, and problem-solving. Participants will also have the opportunity to receive personalized conducting instruction in a masterclass setting. This symposium offers four professional development credit hours.

Tuition and Registration

  • Full Participants: $75 (Entire session including participation in the masterclass and personalized conducting instruction)
  • Auditors: $25

Open to both new and vetern high school orchestra directors.

Curriculum

Presentation on Effective Rehearsing

  • Rehearsal strategies with high school and youth orchestras
  • Problem-solving strategies
  • Developing a healthy ensemble tone
  • Overcoming string pedagogical hurdles

Open Discussions

Chance to ask any questions related to conducting, classroom teaching, score study, etc. Discussion on the challenges of leading an ensemble class either through Zoom or through in-person rehearsals. Each teacher will have the opportunity to share his or her problem-solving strategies and develop new techniques.

Masterclass and Conducting Technique Workshop

  • Technique Workshop and Exploration
  • Full participants will have the opportunity to either share their performance/rehearsal video or receive a personalized conducting instruction in a masterclass setting
