Summer Music Institute 2012

"Study with the Masters" at Western Illinois University

 

The primary purpose of the Summer Music Institute at Western Illinois University is to provide the best possible educational opportunity to young people for individual development in the knowledge, practice, and appreciation of the fine art of music in a nurturing musical environment. Any returning camper receives a reduced camp fee!

SENIOR HIGH CONCERT BAND CAMP

Sunday, June 17-Saturday, June 23 • Cost - $465

Camp Director is Dr. Mike Fansler, Director of Bands, Western Illinois University. Seating auditions will be held on Sunday afternoon, June 17. Camp will include sectionals, technique classes, and an elective from the following: conducting, what to listen for in music, composition, or chamber ensembles.

Students are asked to prepare two pieces of contrasting style and major scales plus a chromatic scale.

Scale requirements in concert pitch are: C, G, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, and a two-octave chromatic scale.

All percussionists should be prepared to perform a piece they have prepared in advance of camp as well as the following rudiments on snare drum: single stroke roll, long roll, flam, ruff, paradiddle, Flam Accent #1, Accent #2, and Ratamaque.

For those attending both a Specialty Camp and the Senior High Concert Band Camp, see the application form for reduced fees. Camp will culminate in a final performance on June 23.

SENIOR HIGH VOCAL/CHORAL CAMP

Sunday, June 17-Saturday, June 23 • Cost - $465

Choral Camps

Camp Director is Dr. James C. Stegall, Professor of Music, Western Illinois University. The Senior Vocal/Choral Camp is designed to challenge, encourage and inspire students of all proficiency levels by providing a wide range of instructional and performance opportunities.

Our master teachers help students explore choral repertoire selected from a wide variety of musical styles including the IMEA All-State selections.

Each day of camp is devoted to nurturing fundamental skills in music reading, vocal production, stage presence, diction, and basic musicianship through creative experiences in rehearsals, master classes, and special enrichment sessions.

SENIOR HIGH ORCHESTRA CAMP

Orchestra Group with Julieta

Camp Director is Dr. Richard Hughey, Director of Orchestral Studies, Western Illinois University. All Senior High Concert Camps will include full sectional rehearsals, technique classes and an elective from the following: conducting, what to listen for in music, composition or chamber ensembles.

Seating auditions will be held on Sunday afternoon, June 17.

All students are requested to prepare two pieces in contrasting styles, and the following major scales in three octaves: C, G, D, F and B-Flat.

SENIOR HIGH PIANO CAMP

(Pre-9th grade summer through post-12th grade summer)

Sunday, June 17-Saturday, June 23 • Cost - $465

WIU's piano faculty will team teach the Senior High Piano Camp: Dr. Jeffrey Brown and Dr. Tammie Walker (Classical) and Dr. Michael Stryker (Jazz). This week-long camp will focus on preparing students to be well-rounded and versatile pianists.

In addition to private lessons, students will attend sessions in technique, sight-reading, keyboard literature, accompanying/chamber music, jazz harmony and improvisation, and perform in a recital at the end of the week.

Students are asked to prepare two pieces of contrasting style and major/minor scales for a placement audition to be held the first day of camp.
