Rocky's Youth Music Camp

Day Camp Only: Grades 4-6

Calling all boys and girls that love MUSIC! Join us for a week filled with singing, instrument play, music games, and other activities. All campers will explore their vocal potential, build their singing technique, and increase their confidence in singing during Rocky's Youth Music Camp Choir. Students will then select two sessions in which to participate; session options may include Introduction to Piano, Hand Chimes and Boomwhackers, Orff Instruments and Recorders, Drum Circle, and Ukulele. The week will conclude with the Rocky's Youth Music Camp Showcase, where students will perform their newly developed musical skills. Join us for this fun-filled musical experience!

Rocky Choir Camp Director: Mrs. Melanie Butcher


Mrs. Melanie Butcher is her fifteenth year of teaching in the Macomb Community Unit School District #185 where she is the 7th-12th grade Choral Director and conducts seven choral ensembles. Each year, her students participate in IGSMA, IESA and IHSA Solo and Ensemble and Organization Contests. Mrs. Butcher’s choirs make frequent community appearances and many of her student continue their education in the field of music after graduating from Macomb High School. Mrs. Butcher previously music taught in the Plainfield School District and at St. Paul Catholic School.

Mrs. Butcher has been actively involved with the WIU Summer Music Institute since 1997. She has served as a counselor, Head counselor, voice teacher, section leader and director of the Junior High Chorus. Mrs. Butcher holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education and a Master of Arts degree in choral conducting from Western Illinois University.

Mrs. Butcher resides in Macomb with her husband, Joe and their two sons, Nick and Andy, and their dog, Savvy.

Drum Circle and Boomwhackers: Dr. Kevin Nichols


Kevin Nichols, Associate Professor of Music at Western Illinois University, teaches applied percussion and percussion methods course, coach jazz combos, and is the Drumline Instructor/Arranger for the Marching Leathernecks. Outside of WIU, he is active as a performer, director, clinician and adjudicator throughout the Midwest and Southwest.

Active as a performer, Dr. Nichols has supported such notable artists as Marie Osmond, Evelyn Glennie, David Amram, Jim Rattigan and the Turtle Island String Quartet. Additionally, he is a section percussionist, assistant timpanist, and drumset specialist with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra. In addition to section duties, he was the symphony’s featured percussionist on their performance of Darius Milhaud’s La Création du Monde and Aaron Copland’s Music for Theatre. Other symphonic performance accomplishments include University of Iowa Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, Knox-Galesburg Symphony, and Galesburg Symphony Chorus.
