Marching Band Leadership Camp Director: Andy Empey

Andy Empey is in his 14th year of teaching and his first as Director of Bands at Galesburg High School. At Galesburg, Mr. Empey directs the Marching Streaks, Pep Band, Wind Symphony, and Symphonic Band. He also assists with the band program at Churchill Junior High School. Before coming to Galesburg, he was the Director of Bands at Limestone Community High School for twelve years. At LCHS, the Marching Rockets earned numerous first place and grand champion awards and was a frequent finalist at the Illinois State University Marching Band Championships. In 2015 the Marching Rockets placed third at the Bands of America Super Regional in Indianapolis IN.

He earned a B.A. in Music Education in 2005 from Western Illinois University and a M.A. in Music Education in 2018 from Eastern Illinois University. Mr. Empey has been very active in the marching activity, being a member of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps in 1996 and 1998 as well as a member of the 2008 Cavalier Alumni Corps. He was a member of the Star United Mini Drum and Bugle Corps from Indianapolis Indiana from 2013-2017. Additional performing groups include the Prairie Wind Ensemble, Fanfare Brass Quintet, and the Knox Brass Ensemble.

Marching Band Leadership Camp Director: Jordan Fansler

Jordan Fansler is the newly appointed Director of Bands at Harold L. Richards High School in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Graduating from the University of Illinois in May 2019, Mr. Fansler was largely involved with the University of Illinois Band Department during his time at Illinois. He participated in the Illinois Wind Orchestra and Hindsley Symphonic Band, served as a Trombone Section Leader in the Marching Illini for two years and was a member of the Illinois Volleyball Band, Women's Basketball Band, and Men's Basketball Band. Jordan Fansler was honored as the recipient of the "Gary E. Smith Excellence in Leadership Award" from the Illinois School of Music. His professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, the National Band Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Music Fraternity of America.

We look forward to having Jordan Fansler back to the Summer Music Institute for his third year. He was drum major for Macomb High School two years and received outstand drum major accolades in multiple competitions. He and Mr. Empey will have much to offer our leadership campers this summer! 

Marching Band Leadership Camp Director: Dr. Mike Fansler

Mike Fansler, Ed.D. is Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois, where he provides direction and leadership for its comprehensive band program. He serves as conductor of the university Wind Ensemble and Chamber Players and teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting. He has served Western Illinois University since 2001.

Dr. Fansler's passion for music has led to performance invitations, conducting seminars and workshops on five continents. He regularly conducts honor bands throughout the United States including his most recent engagements with the Pennsylvania All-State Wind Ensemble, Las Vegas Honor Band and All-Iowa Band. He has lectured on the music of Percy Grainger at the Midwest Clinic and through a grant, visited the Grainger Museum in Melbourne, Australia to further study his music and life.

Marching Band Leadership Camp will focus on being a leader in marching band with emphasis on marching fundamentals, block band drill exhibitions, conducting styles, innovation in salutes, leadership and motivation, aiding the band director, squad competitions and evaluations, multiple drum majors, parade and field commands, and special drill routine exhibitions.

There will be no auditions for this camp.
