Western's English as A Second Language
Within the past year, Western Illinois University has had a 12% increase of international students who attend WIU’s premier english learning courses for international students. These series of courses are compounded into what is known as WESL. WESL or Western’s English as a Second Language organization, consists of teachers who work with the international students who come to WIU trying to study in normal educational courses. The reason WESL was created was to prepare international students for the college life style, but to do this, these students need to know english to the point where they can actively participate in class and complete the assignments given to them by their instructors.
One student in particular, MiaoHui Niu, a graduate student from China, states, “I came to the United States to study computer science, but I need to enhance my speaking, listening and writing skills in english so that I can understand what my teachers and classmates are saying.” MiaoHui went on to state that she is excited about learning in the United States, and she knows learning english will be very challenging, but she has some American friends who can help her on her journey to success.
Learning english is very important to those who’s native tongue is not english because it opens the door to work, study and live in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and other english speaking countries as well.
