WIU Men's Soccer Team Ties Belmont
Western Illinois men’s soccer match on Saturday, Nov. 3, marks the second time Western has reached five ties while in the Division I program since 1983.
WIU men’s soccer team faced Belmont at John MacKenzie Field with a score of 0-0.
Before the game all four seniors on the team were honored: Aaron Appel, Nathan Bruisnma, Hilary Esangbedo, and Aaron Winkelmann.
Both teams combined for 36 shots, 46 fouls, and nine yellow cards.
Senior Nathan Bruinsma almost scored a goal for Western, but it was waived after contact with a Belmont player.
Freshman Erick Bloom and junior Drew Edmond also almost landed a goal, but a Belmont defender blocked both shots.
Sophmore Diego Gonzalez and Bloom scored three shots and all four seniors on the team each scored a shot on goal.
Sophmore Yves Dietrich saved three shots on the goal, and also earned his third shutout of the season.
The Leathernecks were 19-17 in shots and 6-4 in shots on goal and Belmont was 6-5 in corner kicks.
"Today was difficult because this game was meaningless compared to (next weekend) other than the fact that we're competitive by nature and want to win, so I expect that we'll be pretty focused in practice this week," head coach Dr. Eric Johnson told WIU Athletics.
Western will face second-seeded Kansas City in a rematch of Saturday’s game at the semifinal match in the Summit League Tournament.
The Summit League Championship begins on Friday, Nov. 9 at 2 p.m.
There will be another game between top-seeded Oakland and fourth-seeded Fort Wayne at 11 a.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
